The History of IU's mascot
The History of IU's mascot
Lots of you probably wonder, Why does IU not have a mascot? Well believe it or not they used to have a lot! This article will tell you about Indiana's History with mascots.
According to ids.com, our first mascot was an Owl because of the chant Hoo Hoo Hoosiers. That mascot only lasted a year in 1908 and then weirdly changed to a raccoon. In 1912 IU really got a weird mascot, An Actual Toddler! It switched (again) to a Golden Eagle in 1916, a Collie in 1935, and Ox the bulldog in 1959-1969. Then, they made The Bison.
The Bison was created because the Indiana seal has one on it. The Bison was a pretty good mascot and sadly left after 3 years because the costume was hard to breathe in. But of course, that did not stop them. They created Mr. Hoosier Pride, which only lasted 1 basketball season.
Many people want IU to bring back the Bisonbecause of the breathing problem, it probably won’t happen. I would really like to have IU bring back The Bison or Owl or even create something completely new like a cardinal or maybe a Red and White Monster that kind of looks like Southpaw or Wally the Green Monster. Some other teams with no mascots are. The New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins.
57.4 percent of people here want IU to have a mascot if you would like to vote in that poll vote here. I hope you enjoyed my article! Thanks for reading!
