Over the past few years, there have been many big upsets in the NCAA March Madness tournaments. This year has one of the biggest upsets of March Madness history with number 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) defeating number 1 seed Purdue in the first round of the tournament. FDU won with a final score of 63-58. Even though this was a big win, there have been many more shocking upsets from this tournament and past years.
Following Purdue, one of the biggest upsets happened in 1997 with Coppin State (15) and South Carolina (2), Coppin State Defeated South Carolina with a score of 78-65. Another one was (15) Florida Gulf Coast against (2) Georgetown, ending with a score of 78-68. Next, was a game in March, 2016 with Middle Tennessee and Michigan State. Middle Tennessee was ranked 15 and won against Michigan State seeded #2 with a score of 90-81. Lastly, in 2018, (16) UMBC defeated (1) Virginia with a score of 74-54! This was a big win for UMBC!
In this year's NCAA March Madness tournament, we have seven upsets in the first two rounds. Four of these happened in the first round of the tournament. The first of these four was Pitt (11) vs. Iowa State (6), the score of this game was 41-59. The next was Furman (13) against Virginia (4) with a score of 68-67. Next, Princeton (15) and Arizona State (2). Princeton won with a score of 59-55. Lastly, FDU (16) beat Purdue (1) with a score of 63-58.
In the second round we had 3 upsets. The first was Arkasas (8) and Kansas (1). Arkansas won with a score of 72-71. Next, Princeton (15) and Missouri (7) with a score of 78-63. Lastly, Michigan State (7) and Marquette (2) with a score of 69-60.
