Student Council: What it is All About
The bell rings and students are hustling from their lockers to go home for the day, but not the Student Council members. Student Council members enter the school library and have a seat for the meeting to discuss events and school problems. The attendance paper is floating around the room as a hush goes over because the monthly meeting is beginning.
Ms. Schlemmer
Student Council is an extracurricular club/organization that is primarily student-led. They have two sponsors or adult leaders: Mrs. Straw and Ms. Schlemmer.
“I wanted to be a sponsor to meet students that I may not get to interact with and to build connections with them. By being a sponsor that is a way I can do that and be more involved at EJHS,” said Ms. Schlemmer. “I work very closely with a small number of students, and doing Student Council gives me an opportunity to connect with more Colts.”

Alaina Felton
If students were interested in joining Student Council, they had to fill out an application. “You had to fill out a form that had a lot of different things on it about yourself and what you think a leader is, but the biggest one was probably getting a good recommendation from a teacher, '' stated Alaina Felton, a 6th grader here at EJHS. Mrs. Straw and Ms. Schlemmer, the Student Council Sponsors, had to review all of the applications, grades, and discipline reports of the students who sent them in, which was a big job considering there are around 60 kids in the group. The students who made it through the process meet monthly to discuss events and school problems.
“There are a variety of committees that do events, such as Red Ribbon Week, hosting games at Pumpkinfest, the local Pantry 279 mac n cheese food drive, helping with childcare at the 21st Century Scholars Night, and touring new students around the school,” explained Mrs. Straw.
So why should students join Student Council?
“You have a group of 6th-8th grade students working together for something better,” stated Ms.Schlemmer excitedly.
Mrs.Straw added, “Students should join if they are looking for an opportunity to take charge as leaders, do community outreach, and develop plans to reach a common goal.”
Also, some benefits of joining Student Council are, “You get to know what is going on around the school before it happens,” Avi Grile, a seventh grader, added. Alaina simply stated, “You can be more productive, and become a role model.” Those are just a few of the many benefits.
Three favorite things about Student Council are, “I like to see hard work in action within the big group and each committee working together,” Ms.Schlemmer said excitedly. Mrs. Straw’s favorite thing about Student Council is, “I like getting to see students work together/plan together and get excited about having a voice and that voice being heard.” Avi stated, “ My favorite thing is getting creative ideas for posters for food drives and fundraisers.” There are a lot of things about Student Council that students and sponsors enjoy. Now you know everything about Student Council and why you should join next year.
