EJHS has many extracurricular activities and sports, one of which is the EJHS Cheer team. The cheerleading team is made up of amazing people who just want to make people laugh and smile, while still getting in the groove of training and putting in hard work.
A normal cheer practice is 2 hours, but they get a lot done in that amount of time. Cameron Sessions, a cheerleader at EJHS says, “We do stretching, then we go over the chants, the cheers, and the dances. After that we usually do stunts, then we do tumbling, lastly, we go over what we do for a game/prepare for a game.”
Did you know that cheerleading was first invented in 1860 by Johnny Campbell? The history of cheerleading goes a lot farther back than most would expect. While some people think cheer is a sport, and some don’t, it was officially considered a sport until 1999. Though cheerleading is considered a sport, it has not been added to the Olympic Games yet, and will not be appearing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The cheerleaders cheer for football and basketball. Payton Baugh, a cheerleader on the EJHS cheer team loves doing cheerleading, and when asked the question, “What do you like about cheerleading?” responded with “I like the outfits, and I love to do stunting. I also like putting a smile on people's faces, and letting little kids know they could do this too someday.”
Overall, the EJHS cheer team is a group of amazing people who are doing what they love to make other people smile, as well as to cheer on our other EJHS sports. I hope that next time you are at a game, whether that be at EJHS or not, you pay attention to the cheerleaders and see the work they put into doing cheer.
