WARNING: SPOILERS
The Last of Us is a tv show series on HBO max only starring Bella Ramsey as a 14-year-old playing “Ellie” and Pedro Pascal playing 56-year-old “Joel”. The show is based on the video game “The Last Of Us”. The show and game are about a zombie apocalypse and how Joel and Ellie face this new world full of danger. So far there are 9 episodes out currently, the next season will come out sometime in 2024 the latest being the beginning of 2025. A new episode comes out every week at 9 pm on Sundays now taking a break and resuming sometime in 2024-2025. In an interview star, Pedro Pascal playing Joel hinted that they will start filming the following season before the end of 2023 hopefully this spring.
This episode starts with Dr. Neuman sitting on a talk show explaining how pandemics work and how we shouldn’t be afraid of bacteria and viruses, but fungi. Add in climate change, he said, and it would be truly catastrophic. Then we fast forward and see Sarah getting ready for school and planning her dad’s birthday. Joel and Sarah hear over the radio that there is a disturbance in Jakarta, a flower mill. Joel's brother Tommy joins in on breakfast where Sarah finds there is no pancake mix in the cabinet.
Then the three go to leave for school and work. When they see their neighbors outside they offer them biscuits where they turn them down. Joel says that Sarah will be over after school. After school Sarah is scouting out a watch repair shop to fix her dad’s watch for his birthday present. Sarah then goes over to her neighbor's house where there are cookies but Sarah doesn't eat them because they are raisins. Sarah then goes back to her house and presents the fixed watch to her dad then Joel gets a call.
Tommy is in jail and needs Joel to bail him out, all over a bar fight, Joel leaves to get Tommy and Sarah goes over to check on the neighbors where she finds them unlived in a corner and then she sees that the grandma is the cause and that she is some sort of zombie. Sarah runs out of the house where Joel and Tommy show up at the perfect time to get Sarah and get out of there. There are fires and hundreds of infected trying to find their next victims. Then they crashed and were confronted by a soldier that thought Sarah might be infected and he was given the call to shoot the poor girl. Joel then tries and tries to help Sarah but it's useless. She's gone. We barely knew Sarah and personally, I thought for sure that Sarah would have a very good future that was all ended that night.
Twenty years later 2023 in Boston, the world is completely destroyed. Dr. Numan’s worst nightmare came true: the cordyceps-infected people are destroying the world. Fedra, the federal disaster response agency, has established quarantine zones for the survivors but they aren’t allowed to leave. A band of rebels have sprung up, fireflies, we hope that they can overthrow Fedra and create a new democracy. Inside this QZ, Joel searching for his brother, now in Wyoming and his friend Tess have become expert smugglers, but it’s only after being crossed by Robert, who has stolen a battery they were expecting and sold it to the Fireflies, that things really get going. Meanwhile, Marleen has a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, locked up only we aren’t too sure why. Marleen needs Joel and Tess to smuggle her out of the QZ for some stuff. They accept the mission.
They accepted the mission, only to encounter the Fedra soldier Joel had sold sleeping pills to earlier in the episode. Joel is reminded about how his daughter was taken away from him so he makes him realize that Joel is not a man you should point a gun at. And finally, the big reveal the reason Ellie was being held captive is that she was bitten by an infected some time ago but hasn’t turned into a zombie. They are going to test Ellie and hopefully make a cure and turn the world back to the old one that was destroyed over the last 20 years.
And that is where the episode ends, very promising, we know that Ellie is very valuable and might be able to save the rest of humanity. If you like the sound of the first episode, you should watch the show on HBO max. The show does contain vulgar language and a lot of gore that might be triggering or gross to some. Make sure you get permission before watching the show. The show is very addicting Each episode is about 45 minutes to an hour long.
