In January 2023 one of the most unique and jaw-dropping movies was released. This movie is called Missing. This movie is like true crime mixed with thriller. It stars Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, and Nia Long. You may have seen Storm Reid before in the film A Wrinkle in Time, a major film in which she also had a major role. Her contribution to the film and the conveying of each emotion her character, June, had a major effect on its effect. It really would’ve been a different film without her.
The basic summary is when her mother disappears while on vacation in Colombia with her new boyfriend, June, the main character, searches for answers is delayed by international red tape. Stuck thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, June is left with nothing but her laptop and her phone to find her mother before its too late. In order to find her, June has to find the answers to questions better left unanswered. Soon she discovers her loved ones may have more secrets than she thought.
As it turns out this new movie was actually a classic, the original was made in 1982. It had almost the same plot line but with camera angles and animation this movie was brought to life more than just the basic plot line.
This movie is very unique when it comes to the way it was shot. Most movies we are used to are told by the perspective of the “third person viewpoint” or occasionally the “POV viewpoint” meaning we see only what the character sees. Missing was filmed in the “screenlife” perspective, which meant that the audience’s perspective is that of what we are seeing through cell phones, watches, laptops, and even security cameras. Many may find the storytelling tool of moving the narrative through a “screenlife” mystery , but I have to admit the device remains endlessly clever here. Shooting the movie like that adds a whole different element to the film. It limits what the audience knows but at the same time increases the tensity of scenes.
This movie has really fit into its role of being a thriller by creating an ambiance of anxiety and struggle. It really keeps you engaged. We hope this article has persuaded you to watch this amazing movie and give us feedback on how you thought it was. We personally think it was one of the coolest movies we have seen yet.
