It’s almost the time of year where you sit around the table, say what you're thankful for, and then eat a giant meal. Part of that giant meal is always turkey and (although it’s always there at Thanksgiving) some think that ham should take turkey’s spot at the Thanksgiving dinner table. However, is ham even better than turkey and should turkey even remane the main dish at the dinner table?
Turkey is astonishing, it's not even fair to any other meat. I’ll show you why turkey is more patriotic, how it can be prepared and why it’s the original.
First of all tukey is more patriotic. Every year since 1947 the presadent of that year has pardoned a turkey, saving it from being eaten. Never has a pig been pardoned for thanksgiving. Also the use of turkey has gone back since president Abraham Lincon announced Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the US in the year 1863. Similar to that, turkey has been popular in America since William Bradford wrote about how colonists hunted wild turkeys since 1621.
This is a turkey that was pardoned for Thanksgiving.
Second, Turkey can be prepared in more dishes. I know of numerous ways to season or cook a turkey. You can also eat different parts of the turkey such as the wing or leg. With those points in mind turkey can make for great leftovers, every year after thanksgiving my family shreds up turkey and makes sandwiches. However turkey can be used for other leftover dishes like soup, pot pies, casserole and salads, or it could be a substitute for chicken and tuna.
Third, turkey is the original. Although I’ve already covered this a little bit I would like to go more into detail. In most TV shows turkey is displayed as the main dish while ham (if it makes an appearance) is only a side dish. Also according to the National Turkey Federation (yes there is a federation) 88% of Americans surveyed said that they eat turkey for Thanksgiving.
I’m not the only one who likes turkey, these are a few EJHS student’s who said that they like turkey. “Ham tastes weird and turkey is the classic,” said Lauren Martindale when asked which one tastes better and why. Aiden Williamson also said, “Turkey is just amazing”.
So all and all Turkey is a favorite and a classic in America. And Thanksgiving is a great holiday with great food. So this year, have a good Thanksgiving, be thankful and eat a lot of mashed potatoes.
