What's your opinion, cupcakes or donuts? Well we will be learning about donuts in this article, their history, flavors, why donuts are better and facts about them! There is a lot to discover in this article so let jump right into it!
History
When it comes to cupcakes their history isn't that cool so here is some cool history about donuts, they were first invented in 1847 they were called oil cakes. “Donuts are built like the earth”-Jadalynn Rodriguez. They were made by a 16 year old American named Hanson Gregory, this donut was made of cinnamon and nutmeg with a little bit of lemon rind. The first cookbook that mentioned doughnuts was in 1847 but the first donut making machine was made in 1920 in New York City. The Dutch from New Netherlands introduced donuts to America when they were called oil cakes or fried cakes. Donuts were made of yeast dough rich in eggs and butter, spices, and dried fruits, their sweetness came from the fruits and a dusting of sugar. The Dutch ate them for the Dutch Christmas season, which extended through New Years and January 6th.
Variety of flavors
As you probably know, there are a lot of donut flavors you can get unlike cupcakes which only have a few flavors, from glazed to donuts all over the world but we will be talking about people's favorite donuts. Number 1 chocolate frosted donuts, chocolate frosted donuts is a donut that is frosted with chocolate frosting with whatever toppings you would like. Number 2 Jelly donuts, jelly donuts are a donut that can be glazed, chocolate and many other flavors that consist of whatever jelly in the middle of the donut like raspberry and more. Number 3 Boston cream donut, boston cream donut is a donut that is in the shape of a circle, it consists of a little bit of chocolate frosting on the top and some custard in the middle. ”Donuts are delicious!” - Miriam Feulkenburg. So, out of these donuts that I listed, which one sounds the best to you?
Facts
There are a lot of facts about donuts unlike cupcakes which have not so many boring facts. A sailor invented the shape of the donut, a woman named Elizabeth Gregory made donuts for his son for his voyage at sea during the 19th century. Her son made a little hole in the middle of the donut so he could put it on a skewer for him to eat while sailing the ship.”I like donuts because you can simply break a piece off unlike cake”- Ash Burns. Krispy kreme was the first national chain of donuts, a man by the name of Vernon Rudolph brought the secret recipe for krispy kreme donuts to North Carolina where krispy kreme donuts was born and opened its doors on july 13th 1937. Americans are donuts crazy, 10 billion donuts are made every year and only 770 million cupcakes are eaten every year.
