Our school has something many schools don’t, regulation break! Regulation break is a 15-minute period of time in which students are able to get a second breakfast, use the restroom, prepare for their next class, or take a walk outside. There are many reasons why we should have regulation break but some of the most important ones are, regulation break helps students stay organized, take care of their needs, and stay regulated.
Regulation break is one of the few opportunities students have to organize their things. Many students complain about having an unorganized locker, making it much harder for them to get to class on time with all their necessary items. Regulation break is a wonderful time for students to go through their locker belongings and ensure they have everything for class. They can also make it easier to find everything they need during the next passing period. According to Refined Rooms, “Once you begin to clear clutter and put organizing systems in place, you’ll feel lighter and more in control of your life.” I think many can agree that organization makes things a LOT easier!
Regulation break is also a time students use to take care of their needs. Lots of students use the restroom and fill up their water bottles. Marek Stroud, an 8th-grader, said, “It helps people let their mind settle before the next class, and it gives them time for other things.” 33 out of 37 students that filled out a form agreed that we need regulation break. Everyday Health states, “Research suggests self-care promotes positive health outcomes, such as fostering resilience, living longer, and becoming better equipped to manage stress.” When students have the opportunity to take care of themselves it has lasting benefits.
Finally, regulation break helps students stay REGULATED! At the beginning of the year, many students were given access to Slides that explain regulation break. The Slides tell us that, “Taking a break to address our needs will help us function better while we’re at school. We should notice that we’re able to think, learn, and behave to the best of our ability.” In a form we sent out many students said they chat with their friends and walk around. These are both ways to help stay regulated. Jaxan nicholson-hayden, a sixth grader, said, “I think regulation is a good time too well... regulate.” This quote is obvious but true. Lots of things you do during regulation break help you clear your mind and stay regulated!
Some people say that if we didn’t have regulation break we could add time to lunch. Even though a longer lunch would be nice regulation break is also important. In regulation break, you can walk around inside or outside, go to the gym/multipurpose room, or sit in your next class. These are all things you cannot do during lunch. It is also argued that some people seem unregulated after regulation break. Many use the privileges of our break wrong. If regulation break was gone though, would people really stop doing bad things? If students want to do something it is quite likely that they will do it even without regulation break. Many students also use the freedom of lunch to do things that are not necessarily school appropriate.
In conclusion, we need regulation break for the three reasons above, regulation break helps students stay organized, take care of their needs, and stay regulated.
