Here at EJHS, our schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, we have 4 classes and on Wednesday we have all of our classes. All eight classes in a day is known as a traditional schedule, while block is less classes in a day that are longer. I prefer the block schedule for three reasons: we have longer classes, Wednesdays are rushed, and finally, you have enough time to do things on block days.
My first reason block schedule is better is, longer classes let the teachers have enough time to get done what they need to do. Our block schedule gives the teachers 75 minutes a class, during this time the teacher can teach what they need to and it also provides more time for class activities or group work. In classes like Science when you do experiments and projects you need more time to do those and a block schedule offers that.
Wednesday Schedule
Period 1: 8- 8:40
Period 2: 8:45- 9:25
Period 3: 9:30- 10:10
Period 4: 10:15- 10:55
7 Lunch 10:55-11:25
Period 5: 11- 11:40
8 Lunch: 11:40-12:20
Period 6: 11:45- 12:25
6 Lunch: 12:25-12:50
Period 7: 12: 55- 1:35
Period 8: 1:40- 2:20
My second reason block is better is that Wednesdays are very rushed. When you go to class on Wednesdays you usually are in the middle of work when the bell rings, this makes you rush to get your stuff and get to your next class in time. It also gives you less time for work which might make you have more homework. From a form filled out by EJHS students it shows that there is usually more homework given out on Traditional schedule days.
My final reason that the block schedule is better is because you don’t have time to do much after the teacher takes attendance and you finish bellwork. After doing that in a 40 minute class you probably have 25-30 minutes left in class. Your teacher then has to tell you about your work and that leaves you with very little time for work.
I also found a few students at EJHS that agree with me, here are their reasons block is better. “Well block schedules are better because you don’t have enough time to do anything on Wednesdays because it's really rushed.” Agreed Josephine Buckley. Another student, Addi Christian said, "Wednesdays feel so confusing and rushed, I just don’t like them.” Not everyone agrees with me though, like Poppy Bishop she said, "I think they are better because I like having all of my classes on the same day, I also like them because the classes are short and not boring."
