Tyre Nichols was only 29 years old when he was beaten to death by a group of police officers. This incident happened on January 7th, 2023. Earlier this month video footage of the killing was released. People are mad, and people are sad. Since then, there have been many peaceful protests and memorials for him. On January 7th, after he was beaten while calling out “Mom, Mom, Mom,” he was rushed to the hospital in horrible condition. His family says that he was beaten so much he was unrecognizable. The doctors were rushing to get him to stay alive, but on January 10th he passed away.
The officers were telling him to do things that were impossible while he was laying on the ground. One of the officers yelled, “Give me your hands” while the other officers were either punching, kicking, tasing, or spraying him with pepper spray. While all of this was happening he was either calling for help or begging for them to stop and saying, “Y’all are doing too much”. Those officers got their badges taken away, and were charged with second-degree murder. The killers were the following Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith, and Tadarrius Bean.

"He was a human piñata for those police officers. It was unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating of this young boy for 3 minutes," also says Romanucci.
The family of this young boy describes the footage as "appalling," "deplorable," "heinous," "violent" and "troublesome on every level," according to Ben Crump, attorney for the Nichols family. Antonio Romanucci, another attorney for the family says that he was defenseless the entire time."He was a human piñata for those police officers. It was unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating of this young boy for 3 minutes." also says Romanucci. The family says that he was kicked, sprayed, punched, and tased during that horrific video. The family was appalled that the officers were beating him only 2 minutes away from his house and that he was yelling for his mom.
Nichols's memorial was in Sacramento at what was one of his favorite skateboarding spots. The vibe of the skate park was warm and cozy despite the horrible situation. Pastor Phyllis Towles, co-chair of the Religious Committee of Sacramento NAACP says “Make no mistake. This is not a light situation, but we can still comfort. We can still give hope. Our words can still uplift.” Hundreds of people showed up family, friends, and even some people that didn’t know him but wanted to support the family. During the memorial service, there were people speaking about how he was an amazing person and skateboarder. "He was the light we all needed when we were dark," Nichols' friend and fellow skateboarder Ryan Wilson said. "I could never have a bad day with him around," Nichols' friend Auriela Rinauro said. "He just wouldn't let me. "He always said he was free when he was on that board," Nichols' mom, RowVaughn Wells, said.
