There are many ways people celebrate Christmas whether it’s spending time with your family or just having a relaxing day. But with celebrating Christmas comes traditions that a lot of people do every year. Some traditions could be making a certain kind of food on Christmas morning or putting up a certain decoration. But, what are some weird Christmas traditions?
The Yule Lads, Iceland
In Iceland kids don’t get just one Santa Claus, they get thirteen mischievous trolls roaming around the country two weeks before Christmas. Each troll takes a turn visiting children who leave their shoes in their bedroom window. They give candy to good kids and they give rotting potatoes to bad kids. Apart from them giving things to kids, they also are known for being pranksters. Each of their names represent how they like to pull pranks on people.

The Christmas Pickle, US
On Christmas Eve, parents put the pickle ornament on their Christmas tree. On Christmas morning, the first child who finds the pickle gets to open the first present, receives a special gift or gets to hand out the family members presents. It is also said the child who finds the Christmas pickle first gets goodluck for the rest of the year. The origin of this tradition is unknown. The Christmas pickle was originally called Weihnachtsgurke, a German word. Most people think that the Christmas pickle originated in Germany, but today modern Germans don’t follow this tradition.

Hiding Broomsticks, Norway
On Christmas Eve in Norway, people hide their broomsticks and mops in their closets. Why do they do this? Well, people in Norway believe that if you don’t hide your broomsticks on Christmas Eve then an evil spirit like a witch will come into your house and steal it. That would give the spirits a chance to ride across the country. So unless you want a witch riding across the country on your broom, you should probably lock it up.
Those were just some of the strange traditions people do during the holidays. What are some traditions that you do during the holidays? Would you consider them weird?
