Parts of a Yacht – Read and Match
A yacht has many important parts that help it move and stay safe on the water. Read the descriptions below to learn about the functions of each part.
1. Mast
The mast is the tall, vertical pole in the middle of the yacht. It holds up the sails. The sails catch the wind and help the yacht move forward.
2. Boom
The boom is the long, horizontal pole at the bottom of the main sail. It sticks out from the mast and moves side to side. The boom helps control the sail. Be careful—when the yacht turns, the boom can swing across quickly!
3. Helm
The helm is the part of the yacht that steers it. It is usually a wheel or a tiller (a long handle). The person steering the yacht uses the helm to turn left or right. It is generally found at the stern (back of the boat.)
4. Hull
The hull is the main body of the yacht. It floats on the water and holds everything else. People sit, sleep, and store equipment inside the hull.
5. Bow
The bow is the front of the yacht. It is the pointy end that cuts through the water as the yacht moves forward.
6. Stern
The stern is the back of the yacht. This is where you often find the helm and sometimes an engine.
7. Starboard
Starboard refers to the right side of the yacht when facing forward (from the bow).
8. Port
Port means the left side of the yacht when you are facing forward (from the bow).
