Faculty (including me), counselors, student tutors, and more are ready to help you reach your educational goals. We can help you with your course schedule, choosing classes, finding student aid, studying skills, locating, and using sources for an essay--you name it, we have someone who can help.
LAVC has a ton of resources to support you in your learning. Those resources include things you may not expect like our Foundation's scholarships and grants (free money to support your education and build your resume!). Be sure to check out the programs as they may be just the right match for you and they have resources to support your learning. These include, but are not limited to, Veterans, Black Scholars, Dream Center , LGBTQIA Pride Center, Trio, EOPS, Care, NextUp, Guardian Scholars (foster youth), the Family Resource Center (for students who are also parents).
To see the full list and to locate the service you need, see the services on the Online Student Services and Academic Support website. Don’t see what you’re looking for? No problem. Just ask!
As your course instructor, I am your first contact for help you need in this course. If something doesn't make sense, sounds confusing, or you'd just like more information, let me know. Use that Canvas Inbox we talked about.
I am a well trained sociologist who has used statistics in my work and life. I have three degrees in Soc (BA, MA, and PhD) because once I found my social science, I kept learning more. I have worked at for-profit research firms and done academic research. Thus, I have a well-rounded approach to statistics, which is how I came to teach this class.
If you're having difficulty using Canvas, let me know. But if Canvas stops working for some reason or you are experiencing technical issues, please see Canvas Assistance below - they have the magic to get you connected.
We all have unique ways of using and making sense of information. Let me know if the materials that I give you in this class work for you or not. I'm always open to designing new ways to approach the statistical information we are learning.
If you are a student with a disability and require classroom accommodations, and have not contacted the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD), do so in a timely manner. They will work with us to provide what you need to thrive in this course. SSD is located in the Student Services Annex, Room 175 or call SSD at (818) 947-2681 or TTD (818) 947-2680, to meet with an SSD counselor. If SSD has already sent the memo to instructor confirming accommodations required by the student for this class, please meet with me to discuss arrangements. This syllabus can be made available in alternate format upon request from SSD at (818) 947-2681.
Our campus' Virtual Valley office has what you need. They can help you get online or deal with other technical issues. The website itself is helpful. They've got some great online readiness tutorials to check out. The helpline email and phone are: vvhd@lavc.edu and (818) 538-9050, M-F 8:00 AM-4:30 PM and (818) 778-5834, M-F 10:30 AM-7:00 PM.
If we are fortunate enough to get an "embedded tutor", be sure to meet them and let them be your sounding board, feedback person, and stat tutor! They will hold tutoring time just with us and more hours in the general tutoring area. They will be in our initial meetings online and then hold their own meetings.
If we do not have this resource, know that any tutor in General Tutoring will be able to provide the same services - however, they will not be able to attend our class.

Never underestimate the power of a librarian to connect you to just about anything! Our library has amazing resource online and you can reach real live librarians, as specified on their website. The library is the first floor in the LARC building.
Of course, we have our own tutor embedded in our class, so be sure to work with them! They will be working directly through our course via Zoom but also have hours in the General Tutoring center in ARC. ARC also has tutoring help for most topics and they offer online services as well. Tutoring sessions are just like study groups - with an expert! Check it out! ARC services are located on the second floor in the LARC building.
NetTutor is also available as a tab within our Canvas site. That is a 24/7 tutoring service - the tutors could be anywhere in the world but they are there waiting to help you learn.
The Writing Center is also very useful when you have papers to write - their tutors will help you edit and give you great advice for making your papers better.
The Foundation is your source for scholarships, grants, special resources during emergencies like the pandemic. There are a LOT of grants and scholarships available, usually in the Spring semester, but do take a look as you are most likely eligible for many of them.
Counseling is available online. Make sure you see a counselor often to check in on your educational plan and how close you are to reaching your goals.
