Everything we do in this class contributes to the final grade. Our activities carry points, which you earn and accumulate as you do the tasks and assignments. We will learn how to keep track of grades using a statistic you may already know: percent! Please keep in mind that Canvas doesn't always show you an accurate percent for the final grade. See below for how the point system works.
We'll have some reading and videos to review in Canvas which are supplemented by the textbook. What and when to read/view is listed on the schedule and will be outlined in every module in Canvas.
As for what you need to do to document your learning, there are a variety of tasks.
Worksheets – 30 points (18.75% of the total grade) 10 worksheets are 3 points each. We work on these together in class to learn the statistical techniques. You submit them in Canvas to log the points. They are all untimed and set to allow unlimited repeats.
Homework – 30 points (18.75% of the total grade) 10 homework assignments are 3 points each. The homework gives you more practice on the statistical techniques we learned from the lecture videos and worksheet. You submit them in Canvas to log the points. Unlimited repeats and untimed.
Online Work – 30 points (18.75% of the total grade) 10 discussions are 3 points each. These discussions function as an online study group to discuss and practice the techniques we are learning. These build on our class time learning and the worksheets and homework by giving you a place to practice talking about the techniques in your own voice.
Data Analysis Project (DAP) – 30 points (18.75% of the total grade) - DAP1=10 pts, DAP2=10 pts, DAP3=10 pts. This is your chance to apply what you are learning - to do an analysis of topics of your choosing, using the skills you are building in the class.
Quizzes – 40 points (25.00% of the total grade) – 4 quizzes@10 points each. Each of the four modules has a quiz to wrap it up. Each quiz is just more practice in what you're been doing in the worksheets, homework, and discussions. These are cumulative in the sense that what you learn in each module builds on the previous modules.
If you add up all those points, we get a total of 160 points for the required work in this class.
Quiz Proctoring: YuJa Verity, an online proctoring tool, will be used during this course. YuJa Verity offers you flexibility to take your exams at the time and in the location of your choosing.
Technology requirements: Students are required to have a microphone and a strong and stable internet connection.
YuJa ONLY works in the Chrome Browser.
Testing environment: During the course of an exam, YuJa Verity will record the testing environment, therefore students should select private spaces for the exam session where disruptions are unlikely and where recording devices can be enabled.
YuJa Verity Support: YuJa Proctoring Instructions for Students, Email: support@yuja.com or call toll free 1-888-257-2278. If you have concerns about using an online proctoring tool for the reasons listed above or in general, please work with your instructor to find an equivalent alternative.
Please note that while there are a lot of tasks, they are all related to one another. Each set of tasks is practicing the statistics we learn in each module and each one helps you do better in the others.
We start with the worksheets to learn the techniques, move to homework to practice until it makes sense, and then dive into the discussions to get comfortable talking about it in everyday words. The DAPs give you an opportunity to do the same thing but with topic you choose.
Did you notice that your grade is not just based on one type of activity? This is to give all of you the best chance to succeed.
90-100% = A. Excellent. 90% is 9/10 points, 144/160 - Awesome, keep doing what you’re doing!
80-89% = B. Above Average. 80% is 8/10 points, 128/160 - Well done, dig in a bit more.
70-79% = C. Average. 70% is 7/10 points, 112/160 - Passing – Find more strategies to use when studying. Don't forget to work with me and our tutor!
60-69 % = D. Below Average. 60% is 6/10 points, 96/160 - What’s happening? Let’s talk as soon as possible!
Below 59% = F. Unsatisfactory. 59% is 5/10 points, 95.9 (or less)/160 - What’s happening? Let’s talk as soon as possible!
Please note that there is a total of 160 points total of required work in the class. Thus you can see from the grading scheme above, how many points you will need for earning a final grade in the class. (112 to pass and 144 for an A…)
If you look at the Canvas gradebook, there are two 'views' of your grade: You can see how you are doing based on work completed or based on total required points.
If at any time, you want to see what your grade is for the work you have completed, you can look at the Canvas gradebook totals and leave the checkmark in the box that says "based on complete assignments". Alternatively, you can:
Add up your points (call that ‘f’) for the work you have finished,
Add up the total points possible for those assignments that are finished (call that ’N’),
Divide ‘f’ by ’N’ - then multiply that by 100! And you'll have the percent! (This will make more sense when we get to Chapter 2!)
If at any time, you want to see what your grade for the class would be based on total points, you can look at the Canvas gradebook totals and un-check the box that says "based on complete assignments". This shows you what grade you would get if you did no more work in the class. Alternatively, you can:
Add up your points (call that ‘f’) for the work you have finished,
Divide ‘f’ by the total required points for the class (160) - then multiply that by 100! And you'll have the percent! (This will make more sense when we get to Chapter 2!)
I know that learning new information and the quest for "good grades" can sometimes be stressful.
To help reduce that stress and improve the likelihood of really learning the material and getting your best grades - allow yourself the time and space you need to do your best work. Try not to procrastinate, and if you get stuck on an assignment, reach out to me, our tutor(s), or one of your peers. Check out the resources that the college offers.
I welcome your questions and I'm happy to help you think through your ideas so you can successfully complete an assignment. You know how to reach me, right? (Canvas mail!)
There are TAP sections offered. Currently, the TAP program is not offering contracts in which this class could satisfy the requirements. Thus, you would need to re-enroll in a dedicated TAP section.
The Transfer Alliance/Honors Program is for students who want to transfer to UC's or some other competitive universities - it a very exciting program that helps with the transfer process. Check it out!
