I'm Dr. Sally Raskoff and I am your instructor for this wonderful class you're taking, Statistics 101.
Welcome to our “synchronous online” class! This format works like an on-campus class since we have class meetings from 8 AM to 9:25 AM, twice a week, via Zoom. (The Zoom link is in the Canvas site.) We also have work to do online but you can schedule that at any time of the day or night.
This is not a math class and I am not a mathematician. This class is statistics for social science and I am a sociologist. We'll be using stats as a tool to understand people and society. I know that most of you are taking this class because you MUST - to transfer, for your major, or other requirements. What you are going to learn in this class is important for your major or future profession - which is why this is a required class.
I will bring stats to you with a sense of humor and using real data. While this is not an easy class, it is a class in which you can do well.
Statistics are like a language - you have to practice a lot to have it make sense. My goal is to give you the tools you need and to work with you to make statistics a positive part of your life. The materials in your other classes, especially those in your major, will make more sense. You will know when people are lying to you with statistics. You are very likely to use the skills that come from this class in your daily life!
The word cloud on this page has all the major terms we will be learning - and I'll bet you already know some of them! By the end of the semester, we will have discussed all of them and why they are useful - and you'll know how to use them.
This syllabus is designed to be mobile-friendly and provide you with essential information to support you with a successful start in this course. This syllabus is provided as a website so you can easily access it from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. I encourage you to bookmark it so it's easy to find and reference when you need it.
For the rest of the syllabus, I’ve tried to think of the questions you might ask me. Let me know if I missed something.
My preferred contact method is in class! We are in the same space at the same time and communication can be easy.
To reach each other outside class time, let's use the Canvas Inbox. Alternatively, you may use Pronto (in the Canvas site or app or the Pronto app) or email me at my LAVC address.
I am quickest at responding to Canvas mail. I get a LOT of email at my LAVC address thus I may be delayed in seeing your email there. Pronto has some accessibility issues so it is an option, not required.
If you contact me Monday-Friday, I will do my best to respond within 24-48 hours. I may respond quicker and on weekends, but my schedule doesn't always allow that.
We will also communicate within Canvas, through discussions, comments in assignments and grading. I look forward to meeting you in our Zoom meetings where we will communicate in real time!
Log into Canvas, check out the ‘start here’ information and the syllabus, and use the Q&A Discussion!
Ask me before, during, or after class in drop-in hours or via Canvas mail. Ask our tutor.
If your question is not a general question that everyone would benefit from and is specific to you, please send it directly to me through the Canvas inbox.
