Positives & Negatives of Food Retail
Positives:
Grocery stores give people all over the world access to a variety of foods from different areas. This enables people to try different cuisines from various cultures. Food retail also provides a way to store or preserve food to keep them fresh for a long amount of time. Food at grocery stores or convenience stores may also be easy to prepare. This enables people in a hurry to have time to prepare and eat their meal.
Negatives:
Food retail hurts the environment through the process of growing, packaging, transporting, selling, and disposing of food.
Growing- pesticides, toxic chemicals, and water waste all contribute to hurting the environment.
Packaging- plastic, Styrofoam, and other packaging materials all hurt the environment when they are thrown away and not recycled.
Transportation- emits CO2 and other greenhouse gases when items are shipped to different grocery stores to be sold.
Selling- grocery stores throw out food that spoiled because people don't buy it.
Disposing- Sometimes when food is bought, it isn't eaten and is just thrown out. Sometimes when food is stored in refrigerators the energy from them are wasted which results in more Co2 in the atmosphere.
These are just some of the ways food retail is harming our earth. We must be aware of these harmful side-effects of food retail so that we can take steps to reduce the damage to our planet and ourselves.
