You might think that food retail has nothing to do with human health but there is a surprising amount of factors in food retail that can harm our health.
1. GHG emissions
You might think that grocery stores and food retail in general don't emit that much GHG, but surprisingly every year the average grocery store contributes 1,900 tons of GHG to the atmosphere, which can lead to diseases in the human body like asthma.
2. Processed foods
Processed food are very bad for human health and "It can cause high blood pressure, cause fluid retention & bloating, and increases your risks of developing kidney problems & heart diseases" (Meenakshi 5/19/23 Redcliffe Labs).
3. Toxic plastic chemicals hiding in your food.
Yes, you read the above title right. Recent studies have shown that the plastic chemicals get leaked into our food straight from the packaging. "Consumer Reports has investigated bisphenols and phthalates in food and food packaging a few times over the past 25 years. In our new tests, we checked a wider variety of foods to see how much of the chemicals Americans actually consume. The answer? Quite a lot" (Lauren F. Friedman Jan 4, 2024 The Plastic Chemicals Hiding in Your Food).
These are just three out of the many ways food retail is harming your health, so how can we make healthier choices?
An easy way you can help reduce our carbon foot print is...
buying only what you need
being creative with your leftovers
composting
using reusable shopping bags
2. Some ways you can avoid toxic chemicals are... "Avoid eating foods stored in plastic. When possible, buy and eat food without plastic packaging, including whole foods or unwrapped items. If this isn’t realistic, you can transition your food into metal and glass containers when you get home" (U.S.PIRG 4/24/20 How to Avoid Harmful Chemicals in Plastic).
How is food retail affecting our health here in Florida?
Things are definitely looking bad in Florida's food retail industry, there are lots of problems in Florida like food waste; "Florida generated 5.77 million tons of food waste in 2022" (Selene San Felice, Simran Parwani 2022 Florida Wastes Tons of Holiday Food Each Year). Another problem is that "2,314370 people are facing hunger in Florida", (Feeding America What Hunger looks like in Florida).

A way to help our food insecurity problem in Florida is by donating to local foodbanks, this is also something to do with excess food instead of throwing it away. (See organizations in solutions page).
