Trends Over the Years

The 1910s

In the 1910s women wore big hats with silhouettes and a jacket over. Some women wore skirts slightly over the ankle. In the 1910's women wore boots or heels. "Men wore trousers and three piece suits for formal occasions. This consisted of vest, trousers, and stiff collars" (1900s Fashion: Clothing Styles in the Edwardian Era, 2023)

The 1920s

The typical style in the 1920s was the flapper style. It consisted on straight, sleeveless, low cut, short but knee length dresses. Which was improper at the time. Men would wear pants, neckties, waistcoat, suits and suspenders.

The 1930s

In the 1930s the women would wear dresses with wide shoulders, puffy sleeves, modest neckline, high waistlines, usually had a belt on the waistline, and a mid calf hemming. "The men would wear baggy trousers and long jackets. In the 1930s the colors seafoam green, muted gold, pale blue and lavender were very popular"(1930s Fashion: Women’s, Men’s, and Children’s Clothing, 2023b).

The 1940s

Since the beginnings of the 1940's World War ll was still going on, fashion stalled. Most men and women were mostly found in uniform for the war. After the war Christian Dior had started a new clothing line in Paris, returning women's clothing to a silhouette, while this was happening, men, women, and children's clothing, all started to lean towards a sporty, more casual look.

The 1950s

Most fashion for everybody in the 50's was casual, yet elegant and formal. Shoulders lines became more softened, corset waists became smaller, and rounded hips with long skirts became more popular. The iconic poodle skirt emerged with white bobby socks and saddle shoes.

The 1960s

"Fashion in the 1960s became more casual for everyone all ages and all genders. Women had to follow 3 main trends: lady-like elegance, fun and colorful, and hippie styles of the late 1960s"(Reddy, n.d.-b). Following these three trends women would wear bellbottoms, miniskirts, baby doll dresses, shift dresses, huge sunglasses, and go-go boots.

The 1970s

The 70s was a time were women would wear wrap dresses, bell bottoms, platformed shoes, jumpsuits, tie dye clothing, pant suits, bra tops, and aviator glasses. Trousers, patterned knitwear, rollneck, shirts, and jeans were what men would wear back in the 70s. Charlies Angel was a popular TV show that dressed with bell bottoms and tops. They were a trio of police academy graduates.

The 1980s

In this era of time the women would have big hair. The hottest thing for a women to wear in the 80s would be neon colored leggings and spandex, leotards and bodysuits, leg warmers, ripped denim, denim jackets, big shoulder pads in business suits. For men the most popular thing for them to wear was Oxford shirts, polo shirts, turtlenecks, khaki slacks, suspenders, and striped linen suits. Madonna, Boy George, and Michael Jackson weren't just famous singers, they influenced the trends of bright colors, military jackets and that wearing make up wasn't just for girls. Every kid had a swatch, which is a watch that is made out of plastic.

The 1990s

Men and women were coming closer to the 20 century, fashion became a more casual look. The 90's was Grunge fashion. People wore oversized clothing and jeans became dominant. As the decade progressed, women's fashion most streamlines became more minimalism, while children's clothing featured mostly Disney characters.

The 2000s

In the 2000's people used fashion to express themselves. There were many trends in the 2000's. These trends went from dresses over jeans to velour tracksuits. Lots of these trends were based off what celebrities wore, mostly Britney Spears. The overall trends was wearing vests, Uggs, hairclips, mini skirts, denim everything, low rise pants, and sunglasses.

The 2010s

The 1940's-1980's inspired looks in the 2000's. Women wore nipped-in waisted and shift dresses. Pencil skirts and cardigans, and platform heels. Wearing a oversized belt as well. The men's fashion was more traditional. The casual wear of shawl collars, cardigans, knit sweaters were popular options. But soon later, it was a flannel shirt and skinny jeans.

The 2020s

In the 2020's Covid19 was happening so that slowed down the production of clothing. But the trends in the years before and after were high waist silhouettes and tapered shapes. Women wore puffy sleeve dresses. Men wore casual clothes. Such as jeans.

Now

The trends in 2024 are floral, white, jumpsuits, short suits, tracksuits, jeans, crop tops, tank tops and mini skirts.
