Some possible solutions the U.S. government could take to stop fast fashion could be:
Ban fast fashion altogether
Impose an excise tax on all fast fashion products, that will increase gradually, to encourage consumers to quit fast fashion
Force fast fashion companies to produce their clothes sustainably and safely if they want to operate and/or sell in the U.S.
It is known that the United States government is already working on a solution to end fast fashion's negative impact on the environment and human health. On January 7th 2022, the New Standard Institute announced a bill that would require all apparel and footwear retailers with global revenue of at least $100 million selling its products in the state of New York to map their supply chains, disclose environmental and social impacts, and set targets to reduce those impacts.
Unfortunately, this bill is still in the process of being passed, and even if it is passed, it will only be active in New York State. If it is done in the entire country, and even the world too, fast fashion will no longer have such an impactful effect on the environment and climate change.
Some steps a normal person like you can take to contribute in the fight against fast fashion are, shopping sustainable fashion brands, buying used clothing, not purchasing too much clothing that you won't use, and recycling or donating your clothes at the end of their life cycle.
If you are looking for sustainable clothing you should look for certain certifications such as "Fair Trade Certified" , which means that the item was made in safe conditions and the worker that made it is being paid, or "Cradle to Cradle" certification, this means that the item was made to be recycled.
According to a survey carried out by us, out of about 70 Ransom Everglades middle school students, most people only were 3/4, or half of their clothes. If you are a person that doesn't use most of their clothes, you should probably consider donating or recycling the clothes you don't use and only buy clothes that you really like or you need, not just because it is a trend going around.
Although this doesn't seem like much, a small contribution can make a big change.Â
