'He was the district mole catcher, and had thousands of acres of land to keep clear of moles. He would sit up at night, hour after hour, making his mole traps, til he fell asleep from utter weariness, and would rest where he sat, still in his clothes, till he woke, ready dressed to be off to work the next morning.
He had 3d. per acre per year, for this job. He earned more money than any other man in the fen, for he worked like distraction, and it was said of him that 'he ha'n't a lazy bit o' flesh on him'.
