The mission of the school library program is to provide an inviting, dynamic learning environment and services that support and enhance teaching, literacy and learning. This mission is accomplished

- By providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats

- By providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using ideas and information

- By working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students

From: Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning By the American Association of School Librarians (1998)

The goal of our school library program is to provide an inviting, dynamic learning environment and services that support and enhance teaching, literacy and learning.

Our vision for the 6-8 library media center is to be a true center of production of new ideas, experiences, and connections to the world outside our front doors.

In accordance with the ideals set forth in the Profile of a Ramsey Graduate, we seek to engage students in meaningful experiences that foster 21st century learning in areas of critical thinking and research skills, productive and responsible collaboration and communication in the digital landscape, and further their capacity for empathy as they engage in a diverse world community.

The Sora app is our main platform for checking out digital books from both the Smith School Library and the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS).

For BCCLS access, we ask that all students apply for a public library card through the Ramsey Public Library. All Ramsey residents are eligible for a digital card. Email kkelly@ramsey.k12.nj.us for more information.

Sora, BY OVERDRIVE puts a library's ebook and audiobook collection at users' fingertips by allowing them to browse their school's digital library AND use their library card to digitally borrow books. Kids can either download books, which can then be accessed offline, or they can stream them. Sora digitally re-creates the library experience. To navigate the app, kids simply type their book's title or author into the search box or choose a category and scroll to explore titles. Kids can browse a variety of collections and subjects, borrow ebooks and audiobooks, put books on hold, and sync information between all of their devices. Sora automatically activates the juvenile or young adult filter, which limits the titles kids can browse.

Students, please download the Sora App. It can be found in Self Service on your ipad, in the App Store and Google Play Store.

Watch this video for a tutorial on Sora:

To virtually browse or place a hold on books from the Smith School library, log in with your Google account to Destiny and request titles for pickup.

The Ramsey Free Public Library offers a large collection of downloadables and streaming content to Library Patrons.

Hoopla is a digital media service that's available through local libraries to registered users who have a current library card -- kind of like a Netflix that includes books, movies, and more. Kids will need a valid email address and library card -- plus a PIN, if their libraries requires one -- to sign up for the site. (And they can't have any overdue books or fines.) Kids choose a password and use their email address to log in to Hoopla. Users will need a plug-in called Widevine to view content on their Web browser.

Here you'll find book recommendations and reviews! Use the Destiny Catalog to search for books in the Smith library.

Informational databases for all your research projects! Find History, Current Events, Science, Literature, World Languages, Geography and more!
