- Certain large or expensive instruments are provided by Smith School.
- Bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, baritone sax, french horn and euphonium students are issued one school instrument to use at school. Students may bring these instruments home for practice, but families usually rent a second home practice instrument.
- Tuba players will receive a school and home practice instrument.
- French horn players are issued a school double horn in 7th & 8th grade. Students may bring these instruments home for practice, but families usually continue to rent a second home practice instrument.
- Trombone players are issued a school trombone with an F attachment (trigger) in 8th grade. Students may bring these instruments home for practice, but families usually continue to rent a second home practice instrument.
- Reeds, books, and accessories are still the responsibility of families.
- Students must treat school instruments with utmost care, or the privilege of using a school-owned instrument will be revoked.
- Student families are responsible for cost of repairs due to mishandling or carelessness, and replacement of instrument in case of loss or theft when in student's possession.
- The school is responsible for cost of repairs associated with normal maintenance (e.g. new pads, corks, springs, adjustments, etc.) or previously existing damage, and replacement of instrument when lost from assigned school storage space or at school authorized performances.
- All maintenance or repairs on such instruments must be coordinated by the student's lesson teacher.
