COURSE DESCRIPTION

6th Grade Band students are scheduled for two full-band rehearsals and one small-group lesson per week, all of which take place during the school day. Lessons are grouped according to instrument and ability. Lesson content includes sequential studies in music literacy, technical development, instrument-specific pedagogy, and the application of these skills. Rehearsal content includes development of ensemble/musical skills and the preparation of performance music for concerts/clinics. Students are able to participate in the 6th Grade Advanced Band extra-curricular group at Smith School, as well as work toward nomination for the Region I Elementary Honor Band.

EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to be prepared with all required materials including instrument, accessories, music, lesson book, and pencil. Home practice will also be required to complete recorded assignments and prepare concert music. It is recommended that 6th grade musicians practice 20 minutes/5 days a week.

HOMEWORK POLICY

All classwork and homework assignments will be posted on Schoology. There will be a new home practice assignment posted each week. Most of these will require a recording be submitted through SmartMusic or Schoology. Late assignments may be submitted for partial credit.
