Research Skills

In the Dater ITC, students practice research skills in both 4th and 5th grade.

We encourage students to use safe, reliable sites for information while researching a topic. We focus on research using nonfiction books, Tools - Explore in Google and World Book Online Encyclopedia (K-12 subscription service). Both Tools - Explore in Google and World Book help students easily cite their sources of information in a bibliography while researching.

Image searching is always difficult. While we want to teach students to become effective, efficient web searchers, we want safety to be key. In the ITC, students are asked to use images from World Book Encyclopedia, or on the first page of a search within a Google doc using Tools - Explore and to check whether the image can be reused and then of course to properly cite it.
