A good digital citizen uses technology responsibly.
Digital citizenship is the responsible use of technology to learn, create, and participate. (Common Sense Media)
The K-12 Ramsey School District follows the Common Sense Digital Citizenship Curriculum. Throughout the school year at Dater School, students are led by the Information Technology teacher, principal, guidance counselor and classroom teachers in digital citizenship lessons. Fourth and fifth grade students create a classroom pledge and a personal digital fingerprint early on as reminders of their responsibilities to model good digital citizenship. Lesson topics include: strong passwords, talking safely online, keeping personal information private, cyber-bullying and learning to create a bibliography when researching to give credit and avoid plagiarizing. I will be enrolling each of our students in a Common Sense Media program called: Digital Passports. Game based, students will be taught critical skills related to digital safety, respect, and community. Students can access this site both at school and at home.
Of course, the home/school connection is very important. Please see this link for parent resources from Common Sense Media. Together, we can empower your children to be protected and do the "right thing" online. Thank you for your support.
