PEDAGOGICAL STRAND: BLENDED LEARNING
Unlocking the Potential of BL to Increase
Student Engagement and Learner Agency
Synopsis
This series of PEDTalks (session 1 and 2) will share how blended learning (BL) has been adopted as a pedagogical approach to increase student engagement and student agency by empowering both educators and students in the learning process. Based on a school-wide academic research on BL (2021 - 2023), a whole-school BL metalanguage was adopted using Graham's BL model. The model introduces 4 BL competencies that compels a reframing of teachers’ perspective on instructional design. The competencies are:
(i) Online Integration
(ii) Online Interaction
(iii) Data Practices and
(iv) Personalisation
Online Integration necessitates the reconceptualisation of existing lesson design to effectively harness the dual modes of online and in-person instruction. The Online Interaction component requires teachers to rethink the nature and dynamics of interactions in instructional design. Data Practice and Personalisation components call for a shift to a greater emphasis on student-agency.
Session 1 will be held on 27 Aug 2024. The session aims to provide an overview of the BL model and explain how each of the four competencies can be translated into instructional design. At the table conversations, participants will share and explore how each competency may be applied into practice and decide what they value, and how they plan to bring them into their own classrooms. At the end of the session, participants will come away with BL Design Considerations which may serve as a practical guide for teachers to apply the four BL competencies into their lesson designs.
Session 2 in February 2025, will be a follow-up session that will showcase a few BL lessons from various disciplines that have been designed, planned or implemented in the classrooms using the BL Design Considerations and BL strategies. The session will provide an opportunity for teachers to find ways to improve their practice by sharing what works and what does not, and provide greater clarity for application and evaluation.
