Since the rise of American commercialism in the 1900s, Black Friday has been a traditional marker for the start of the long-anticipated Christmas shopping season. You may have seen the videos of hungry, ravenous shoppers swarming a retail store in the chaotic race to get their hands on the best discounted goods. The “king” of retail, Black Friday, has brought both joy to consumers and business owners (though perhaps at the expense of workers).
Recent trends, however, have shown evidence of a sharp decline in sales on Black Friday as compared to the past two decades. According to RetailNext, in-store foot traffic on Black Friday has decreased by over 3.2% every year, with predictions that the holiday will fade away in the next few decades. While the percentages of in-store shoppers have varied across regions, a clear trend has emerged: shoppers are not showing up for Black Friday as they did in the past.
As online shopping has gained popularity, the appeal of in-person shopping has decreased. Shoppers have found it more convenient to do their Christmas shopping online rather than in person. Cyber Monday, which occurs just three days after Thanksgiving, has become the more desirable and simpler choice; Rather than waiting in long lines out in the cold on a late-autumn day, it is wiser to do everything in the comfort of your own home, with no shopping chaos.
Another reason behind the decline in shoppers on Black Friday is that the discounts and deals are no longer as exciting as in the past. Online stores constantly roll out sales for every occasion of the year, thus diminishing the prevalence of Black Friday. Days like Cyber Monday, Amazon Prime Day, Small Business Saturday, and various other seasonal sales offer better deals throughout the year than ever before. While one cake is special and desirable, too many cakes can ruin the appetite. Black Friday is just another discount day out of several others.
Stores have begun to offer exclusive in-store deals, but this may not provide enough incentive for shoppers to return to in-store shopping. Black Friday has peaked in its popularity, and can only go on a downward trend in the years to follow.

When it comes to diabetes, there is more misinformation out there than sugar in a candy bar. Myths are spread so thin from “you get it from eating too much sugar” to “you can’t even play sports” that they have become a part of online cultures. Diabetes however isn't a punch line of some sort of mystery, it is a medical condition that is surprisingly common. Let me clear the bad blood around diabetes and explain the truth.
Let me start with the most common one, most people believe diabetes is caused from eating too many sweets. In reality, Type 1 diabetes is more of an autoimmune disease where the immune system destroys insulin producing cells in the pancreas. It has nothing to do with one's diet or lifestyle choices. Type 2 is when the body becomes resistant to insulin and although being healthy can help maintain or prevent it, eating sugars alone does not cause it. Saying “sugar causes diabetes” is like saying how a rooster causes the sun to go up, it can be present but not the cause. People with diabetes don’t need to completely cut off sugar in their diets too. With proper management, they can enjoy desserts like anyone else would, the only difference is monitoring their glucose levels and balancing their carbs with physical activity.
Not only is this myth false but it is extremely harmful. Diabetes can just about affect anyone. Type 1 usually shows in teens or children who are otherwise perfectly healthy, and many with Type 2 are not overweight at all. Genetics and family also play a huge role. When people assume overweight people equal diabetes it creates a stigma that makes those living with it feel judged or misunderstood. Olympic swimmer Gary Hall jr. and even musician Nick Jonas have Type 1 diabetes which is proof that people with diabetes are still active and successful. The reality is that diabetes does not discriminate, anyone can end up with it.
Another big misconception is that all diabetes is the same. In reality there are multiple different types like Type 1, Type 2, Gestational (which typically occurs during pregnancy) and even a mixture called Type 1.5. Each affects the body differently like how some depend on insulin daily and others control it with medications or a diet. Not everyone will know if they have it right away, symptoms like thirst, fatigue or sickness can creep up slowly and are common side effects to any illness. Millions of Americans have undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetes without even realizing it. Alongside this, another huge belief is that those with diabetes always have a serious complication such as blindness or amputations which are really outdated. Those risks DO exist but are luckily, more uncommon due to today's modern technology which has come a long way.
If social media has taught you anything, it is to not believe everything you see online, not everyone is a health expert. You might have heard influencers talk about how a spoonful of cinnamon a day or a shot of vinegar can cure diabetes. Unfortunately, that is just not how that works and although diets can help manage Type 2 diabetes, it can not permanently cure it, at least not yet! People with diabetes can become artists, doctors, athletes and create families, their life is not limited even with such an illness. Diabetes does NOT define someone and is just one small piece of who they are. It is not the end of the world and it is definitely NOT contagious. The real challenge is not diabetes but the box that society has created to put diabetics in.
The autumn season marks the transition between spring and winter. This transition brings many fall activities, including arts and crafts! Below are fun and easy arts and crafts activities you can make at home with your friends and family!
Carving pumpkins is the most common tradition for the fall season! Carve one out and you can display it on your front porch to get into the festive mood!
Materials:
Pumpkin
Marker
Knife or any carving tool
Light source like a battery candle (Optional)
Steps:
Carve a hole underneath the pumpkin and scoop out the inside.
Use a marker to outline the face of the pumpkin’s surface.
Use the carving tool (or knife) to cut along the outline from Step 2.
Push out the pieces from Step 3 to get a hollow pumpkin with a face at the front!
(Optional!) To make a jack-o’-lanter, put a light source inside the pumpkin to make it look alive!
Want something smaller than a life sized pumpkin? Try out making a paper pumpkin that is cute and fun to make!
Materials:
Colored paper (Specifically Orange and Green)
Glue
Stick
Twine
Scissors
Steps:
Cut 5 strips of paper: one with 7 inches, two with 9 inches, and two with 11 inches (This will be the body of the pumpkin!)
Fold each of the strips into accordion strips.
Glue each individual strip with itself to form a circle!
Grab two edges of a circle and pinch them into each other and glue the center of the “circle.”
Once the glue is dried, flip over the circle and attempt to open it from inside out to form a medallion.
Repeat steps 3,4,5 for all strips from step 1.
Glue each of the medallions starting with 7 inches on the top, then 9 inches, then 11 inches, then 9 inches on the bottom.
Glue a small stick, twine, and a few paper leaves on top!
In autumn, trees begin to transform from the lush green leaves to falling warm colors before the tree lays bare with just branches. Inspired by the beautiful change, tissue paper fall trees are easy and pretty to admire the beautiful autumn leaves!
Materials:
Tissue papers
Construction paper
Glue
Scissors
Steps:
Draw a tree trunk on a construction paper and cut it out
Past the cut out tree tunk onto a clean construction paper
Rip up tissue papers and pinch each ripped up tissue paper
Glue each ripped up tissue paper onto the branches of the tree trunk!
(Optional) You can put some ripped up tissue papers next to the tree trunk to appear like the “leaves” have fallen!
Turkeys are the most symbolic animal for the fall, especially for Thanksgiving holidays! Hand turkeys are fun and simple, but also show signs of gratitude for a holiday full of thankfulness!
Materials:
Construction paper
Scissors
Googly Eyes
Glue
Steps:
Draw two circles, one large for the body, and one small for the head
Draw a triangle for the beak, a cylinder tube shape for the snood, and fork-shaped for the feet
Glue the small circle on the top part of the large circle
Glue the snood at the center-right of the small circle and the beak (with the tip pointing downwards) on the center of the small circle
Glue the feet on the bottom of the large circle
Glue two googly eyes on the upper part of the center of the small circle for the eyes
To make tail, draw the outline of your hands on three different colored construction paper
Cut out those “tails” and glue them on the back of the turkey!
(Optional) You can cut out a small hat or other accessory on your hand turkey!
There are so many more arts and crafts out there to make! Here are some more ideas for fall season crafts that are easy to make at home! Enjoy!

As September wraps up, we can reflect on the month and be thankful for all the new releases! From the albums some artists released it is clear that even though the presence of fall is very strong, the giddy feeling of summer still lingers as we head towards October. There were countless new albums, singles and EPs in September and there were definitely highlights to me. Endless genres flow freely throughout the month as we see long awaited returns of artists such as Doja Cat and Zara Larsson or the debut of certain groups that have the potential to shine in the future!
A perfect example of the summer feeling!
Recently, the song’s been very popular because of Zara Larsson being a supporting act in Tate McRae’s latest tour
My highlights: “Midnight Sun”, “Blue Moon”
A long awaited new album for Doja Cat, her last being Scarlet.
Explicit
My highlights: “AAAHH MEN!”, “Take Me Dancing ft. SZA”, “Lipstain”
Another awaited comeback from another artist, her last album being Invasion of Privacy.
Explicit
My highlights: ”Dead”, “Pick it Up ft. Selena Gomez”, “Safe ft. Kehlani”
Additionally, there were also a few highlights during the summer that I really enjoyed. As the Raider Roundup wasn’t writing new articles during the summer I wanted to include the music I enjoyed over the summer as well. Even if the weather is starting to cool and as we, slowly, begin to layer up this music can still soothe the ache of a finalized summer.
ILLIT, a Korean girl group, comes back with their 3rd mini-album since their hit debut SUPER REAL ME.
My highlights: “Billyeoon Goyangi (Do the Dance)”, “jellyous”, “little monster”
Chappell Roan first performed “The Subway” at the Governor's Ball Music Festival as a surprise and later released the single.
The song gained traction due to its emotional message and fun advertising via secretive messages through posters.

Autumn has officially begun! The leaves are turning, the air’s getting colder, and suddenly it feels like the perfect time to trade summer sidelines for something a little more at ease. Fall isn't just about pumpkin spice and Halloween; it marks the seasonal transition to our most beloved and secure comfort shows! Whether you find enjoyment in rewatching your favorite series or finding a new show that just screams fall, everyone has their go-to picks and preferences. However, you may be one of the few like me, who are unsure about what to watch or simply are unsure of what feels right to enjoy throughout the season. So, to see what people are watching this fall, I asked students around school what their go-to fall favorites are.
A series following the close relationship between a single mother and her daughter in the town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut.
The series follows a young girl (Elena Gilbert) who falls for a vampire, drawing her into a dangerous supernatural world.
A sitcom following the detectives of the NYPD's fictional 99th Precinct.
A medical drama about the personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their mentors at Seattle Grace Hospital.
.Based on L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, telling the story of an orphan, Anne Shirley, who is mistakenly sent to live with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert on their farm in the 1890s
A silly series portraying the daily struggles of a group of young children and their dog, Snoopy.
Follows high school chemistry teacher Walter White, who turns to drug dealing with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, after a terminal lung cancer diagnosis.
American teen drama television series about the lives of a close-knit group of friends in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts.
Follows the complex, evolving lives of two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, in the small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina .

With Fall finally in motion, the air is colder, the days are shorter, and Halloween is right around the corner. It is officially the perfect time to binge horror movies, it can be ones that make you jump, laugh, or regret watching them alone. No matter what type, the fall vibe and dark evenings make horror fi feel right. Watching them can turn a normal night into something exciting, whether another or with friends.
Not every horror movie is worth your time. Some are classics that you must watch, some are underrated movies, and others are hyped way worse than they should be. Choosing the right film may be tricky, as everyone has their own preferences in what makes a horror movie scary or fun.
To make it easier to decide, I have made a list of horror films that are perfect for this season. Whether you’re in the mood for watching a movie that gives you a full on scare, a clever twist, or something that captures the fall vibe, these movies are perfect for you. No matter if you’re alone or with friends, they’re all movies that will make October feel more memorable. So grab your coziest blanket and some snacks, as these horror movies will make your fall a little more exciting.
A modern horror film that’s suspenseful and unsettling. Its mix of psychological tension, as well as social commentary keeps you on edge the whole time.
Coraline is a beautifully written film that is more eerie than scary. Its imaginative world and creepy visuals keep you intrigued. It’s the perfect fall movie that’s spooky in a way that isn’t too intense.
An original slasher classic everyone loves! Michael Myers and the eerie small-town vibe make it perfect for an October night. It may be tense at some parts, but it is an
iconic horror movie.
The Exorcist is a true horror classic, famous for its disturbing scenes. Its intense and unsettling atmosphere makes it perfect for a scare on a fall night. This movie isn’t for someone who gets scared easily, but if you want a film that is truly horrifying, this may be for you.
The Conjuring is a film full of suspense and jumpscares. It is a bit creepy, but does not rely on gore, making it more appropriate for a cozy fall evening.
We are now one month into the school year and by now, I know that many of you have confronted the struggles that notoriously come as a package deal with junior year. It is most often said that junior year is the toughest time that high schoolers go through — “a hellscape” said one senior. AP classes enter the mix; college talk starts seeping through the seams; school work may pile up; extracurriculars start to feel extra; and your personal life and mental health hang in the balance. Of course, this isn’t an accurate depiction for every former or current eleventh grader’s experiences, but some baseline stressors. Personally, I have been wrestling with these struggles. I have a fairly busy schedule, to say the least, as I know many of you do, too. It has been somewhat of an uphill battle for me in these past few weeks. Adjusting to school was particularly difficult this year, but I believe a lot of that difficulty stemmed from the stigma around junior year. However, I implore you to fear no more! After speaking with multiple seniors about the “Do’s and Don’ts” of junior year, I have condensed their advice to create a key to a successful, well-managed junior year.
Many of them began with emphasizing the importance of sleep. Eight hours is an ideal amount of rest a night, and you should try to get it often. However, don’t beat yourself up if you got home late from marching band rehearsal and have homework to do. One senior said to “take a breather”, do what’s necessary, and then, get the most solid night of sleep that you’re able to. It was with absolute seriousness that one remarked, followed by all around agreement, that you should not “be one of those all nighter people.”
Another topic of accordance was that you should be a confident and conscientious student. Never be fearful about speaking to your teachers; it’s most beneficial to create a relationship of respect and understanding with your instructors. They reflected that being a conscientious student was imperative for the far reaching future. Keeping your future plans in the back of your mind throughout junior year is helpful so that you can plan accordingly. It is not meant to be a cause for alarm or a stressful motivator, but something to keep you on track. Let’s say, hypothetically, there’s this school I heard about, but to be considered by them, my one sport or extracurricular won’t cut it. A smart move would be to find another activity that both elevates my standings and works within my routine. Through never taking it off the table, you prepare an attractive application and yourself for the tumultuous time of applying and leaving for college.
Time and again, we are told that procrastination is our worst enemy; future agony is what awaits us when we delay something for current gratification. Every senior I spoke to echoed the same, Nike inspired chorus: “Just do it.” We all take a stop at Procrastination Station on occasion, but to pitch a tent there is a dangerous game during your junior year. To avoid going down this route, it’s recommended to take advantage of the free time you're given. Maybe use your allotted study time during the school day to finish your math homework rather than scroll through Tik Tok. Or when there is a half-day Wednesday, take that time to work on an upcoming project you wouldn’t normally have extra time for.
Alongside making your time count, staying on track of your schedule, or ideally ahead of it, is another crucial tool that the seniors mentioned. It does not have to be the next six months of your life perfectly planned and written out but looking ahead by one or two weeks. Knowing what you will encounter before it confronts you may alleviate much of the stress that comes with it. And even better, being ahead of your work load is another great way to reduce pressure. Nonetheless, it all comes down to who you are. Taking it day-by-day or however else you may approach your responsibilities can be perfect, as long as it works for you!
Your life is yours, and it can be only what you make of it. You may have a list of priorities that dictate how you run your life, which is an awesome organizational tactic for some, but remember to put yourself at the top of it. Nothing is ever as serious as looking after yourself; not your academics, not a situationship, not a practice, game or a show. Don’t convince yourself that you’re “locking in” this year, but when it’s through, you’ve truly isolated yourself. Take time to branch out — start or join a club; make plans with new people or those you’ve only considered “school friends”; explore who you are outside of school or other realms that you find define you. I know that when I try to focus on myself, it might mean I am enjoying time alone or spending it with people who I need at that moment.
So please don’t fret juniors. Think of happy thoughts, like the School Store cookies. Let’s heed the advice of our upperclassmen and stop the stigma by ruling this year, not it ruling us!

With Autumn officially in motion, the air is getting colder, the days shorter, and trees are waiting for their leaves to change color. As the leaves tumble to the ground in their red and orange hues, this paints the perfect backdrop for music that is just as nostalgic. Some songs seem made for this season—vibes that scream sweater weather, late-night walks, and a time of change.
While fall songs aren’t always written about the season itself, they carry its essence–moody yet comforting, whimsical yet grounding.
As students settle into their first semester, it can be hard to find the perfect tracks to listen to while studying late into the night (not that I recommend staying up late) or tuning out the noise of everyday life. With that in mind, here are some tracks that may keep your company this season:
Album cover: The Neighbourhood – I Love You.
Album cover: Stephen Sanchez – Easy On My Eyes
Single cover: beabadoobee – Coffee
Single cover: girl in red – we fell in love in october / October Passed Me By
Single cover: Rocco – Sunny
Single cover: Conan Gray – Astronomy
Album cover: Clairo – Immunity
Album cover: Mitsuki – The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We
Single cover: JVKE – this is what falling in love feels like
Single cover: Lana Del Rey – Season Of The Witch
Album cover: Billie Eilish – HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
Not Feeling These Tracks?
If you don’t normally listen to music or these songs aren’t your style then that’s okay! Autumn vibes can come from many sources. Think of it as inspiration to make an Autumn playlist or contemplate on what you want to do this season!

Autumn is in full swing now! It’s the perfect weather to curl up with a sweet treat and a pumpkin spice latte. But what sweet treat should you pick?
Here are 2 recipe ideas to take full advantage of the seasonal produce!
Sugared cranberries are a delightful little snack; these have a slight crunch and pop in your mouth with a lovely tart and sweet flavor. I’d recommend drinking a lovely cup of apple cider with this!
Fresh cranberries
Sugar
Water
Powdered sugar (optional)
Measure out a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water. Add it to the saucepan.
Boil the simple syrup until there are no visible clumps of sugar left.
Wait for the syrup to cool.
Put the cranberries into a bowl, then add the simple syrup and toss them together.
Prepare a plate of sugar; you can use either granulated sugar or powdered sugar.
Toss the sticky cranberries in the sugar until they are all coated.
Enjoy!
It’s apple-picking season! This recipe will take full advantage of this year’s apple harvest. While I can’t guarantee that these tarts will keep the doctor away, I can promise you they’ll bring a smile on your face with how good these are.
Two thawed puff pastry sheets
2 Honeycrisp/Fuji apples
⅛ cup of brown sugar
⅛ cup of white sugar
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
½ teaspoon of nutmeg
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1 egg
Optional: Powdered sugar
Peel and slice your honeycrisp apples; I prefer mine to be thinly slice, but you can also dice them if you prefer.
Put your apples into a bowl and toss it with lemon juice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Put the apples into a pot, and add the brown sugar and white sugar.
Cook the apples on low heat for around 7 minutes. Make sure your apples are not fully cooked/soft, as we will be baking them again later!
Preheat the oven to 400° F.
Roll out and cut your puff pastry sheets into 6 rectangles.
Fold each edge of the rectangle in, and then use a fork to press the edges into the dough.
Brush the pastry with egg wash.
Use a spoon to put some of your cooked apples onto the puff pastry.
Bake for 20 minutes.
Optional: Dust with powdered sugar!
The leaves are changing colors, and the weather is getting colder. As everyone stores their summer clothes away and brings out their warmer clothing, a common issue faced by teens is not having enough or the most stylish clothing for the season. However, remember that it's not just about following trends; it's about expressing your unique style. Following the ongoing changes in style from one season to the next, it is essential to understand what clothes to buy and how to style them effectively. If you’re going for a classy fall wardrobe, oversized blazers and trench coats are a must for a “quiet luxury” look. These pieces are not only stylish but also versatile, allowing you to create multiple looks. However, if you prefer sticking to the latest trends, the best classic fall staples include oversized knit sweaters, checkered blazers, leather jackets, wool coats, and knee-high boots, along with long sleeves, which are a must for a stylish yet warm fall. An academic style is also most common, featuring pleated skirts, plaid patterns, varsity sweaters, Oxford shirts layered under sweaters, and accompanied by knee-high socks and loafers. Recently, more red or maroon tones have been in style, such as fuzzy scarves, handbags, boots, and jackets, which would pair well with this particular style. For those who prefer a streetwear or rugged look, oversized denim, black leather jackets, baggy cargo pants, graphic long sleeves, beanies, combat boots, or even platform sneakers are perfect for maintaining warmth while serving a stylish look. If you’re seeking a more feminine, chic look, consider clothing pieces such as long denim skirts, knit midi skirts, knee-high boots paired with sweater dresses, neutral-tone turtle necks, and statement belts, along with gold jewelry, which pairs best with this particular style. Remember, you can always mix and match different styles to create a unique look that reflects your personality and preferences. So, this fall, don’t just layer up for warmth, but layer up with intention. Mix clothing staples and trends, experiment with various styles, and make your wardrobe a reflection of your personality. Fashion fades, but your style is here to stay!
