The conductor is the person who stands in front of the orchestra and waves their arms. Maestro Matthew Kasper is PYSO's Symphony Orchestra conductor.
What is a conductor and what do they do?
The conductor's main job is to set the tempo (how fast or slow the music goes) for the orchestra. They can also tell the orchestra to play louder (forté) or softer (piano), shorter (staccato) or longer (legato) and many other things with different signals given by their arms.
What does it take to be a conductor? How did Maestro Kasper decide to become a conductor?
Conductors have to study the music in depth before the first rehearsal because they decide how the piece should be performed and teach the orchestra. In fact, the term Maestro, which conductors are sometimes called, means teacher.
Most of the work done by a conductor is in rehearsal, before the actual concert. There can be many rehearsals to get ready for one concert. Conductors are like a coach in sports getting the team ready for the game.
