I want to read... at least 30 Books! This year, I'm also trying to read a range of voices from a variety of cultures.

Tear jerker! I loved the way this book flipped between a contemporary life in the U.S. with a story that occurred in Poland during WW II.
The book is cleverly structured with two stories intersecting. Family mysteries are solved against the tragic backdrop of Poland during WWII.
I've chosen to challenge myself this term by reading Debra Dank's We Come With This Place.
I want to read this book for a number of reasons:
Debra Dank is coming to Pymble as a Writer in Residence this term and I will be able to meet her and ask questions about her writing and her experiences
I'd like to have more of an understanding of the experiences of Indigenous Australians
This book has been "awarded a record four prizes and a total $85,000 at the New South Wales premier’s literary awards" (from Guardian article below)
I haven't read a non-fiction/memoir/autobiography for a while
I read this article about the book on the Guardian website and it intrigued me: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/may/22/significantly-shocking-debut-author-debra-dank-breaks-records-at-nsw-premiers-literary-awards
My feelings about my challenge read...
Debra Dank's book has given me more of an understanding of Aboriginal Australians experiences as well as the relationship Indigenous people have with the land. It has given me more of an understanding of what it means to be "on Country", a term I have heard many times before but have not fully understood.
Debra Dank's writing is so beautiful, I had to go back and re-read some sentences or passages. One of my favourite parts: "Our story is etched into the rocks and it whispers through the trees and with our kin who are more than human. The wind tells it, sometimes strolling gently, sometimes bellowing from cavernous, dark, felt places, where eyes do not see, and only our goodalu can feel. Our stories are the memories that scratch and gnaw as we walk, and we rub shoulders with the past..." (p xvii)

This book made me think about how culture shapes our understanding of ourselves, our opportunities and our limitations.
