Jazz Band is open to 7th and 8th grade students in the TJMS band program through audition. Students can play any instrument, but may also consider learning a jazz compatible instrument before entering jazz band. Some instruments are available through the school.
Many woodwinds players that don't play saxophone find it easy to pick and can begin participating quickly. Clarinet players may join jazz without any need to learn another instrument, however they may find it more enjoyable to learn the instrument the parts are written for. Saxophones can often be found on Facebook Marketplace for $200-$300. Recommend brands can be found here: Rental Info
An intro to jazz class is offered during the first session of summer school to get students introduced in the style and learning the instrument change if needed. Students that participate in this summer class are not required to take the audition for jazz.
Traditional jazz instruments are the following:
Saxophone (alto, tenor, bari)
Trumpet
Trombone
Bass (prior experience or go-getter attitude needed)
Piano (prior experience needed)
Drum Set (prior experience needed)
The 25-26 school year also marks a shift for the jazz band at TJMS. The jazz band will be taking over parade duties where it was once done by the 7th and 8th grade band members. Jazz band members will ride on the back of a truck for the homecoming parade.
