I believe that Math/Science is for ALL!
The way I teach has a tremendous amount to do with student involvement. Teachers should not be lecturers, but facilitators of learning. To use a metaphor: I am the river guide down the roaring rapids that is Mathematics and Science. Sometimes we may fall out of the boat, but we will be right there to pick one another up and keep paddling down river. My classroom does not function without student involvement and I keep track of participation daily. If students participate they are actively engaged in what they are learning and are more likely not only to retain what they are learning but also enjoy it! I concentrate heavily on questioning strategies to teach my students, what to ask themselves when they are faced with a problem. We will decode many things throughout the year and develop as mathematicians and scientists.
Another vital role as an educator is a developer of young minds into the future leaders of our world. I would like to see students who have a growth mindset about life as well as school. It is my job and duty to be there for students in their times of trouble as life throws its constant curve balls at us. I have an open door policy and am available before and after school for math/science help and life help if needed.
I have wanted to be a teacher since the 7th grade and have worked towards that goal ever since. After teaching for 9 years I am as excited as ever to continue to inspire students to be better than they thought they ever could be; just as so many educators have done for me throughout my life.
