Veteran's Day
On November 11, 1918, a federal holiday in Birmingham, Alabama, was discovered. This holiday is called Veteran's Day. Veteran's Day is a day to appreciate and remember all the men and women who fought and died for our country. It has been calculated that over 1,304,446 people have died from war throughout the years. We now celebrate this holiday annually to commemorate these lives and continue to live on. We love you Veterans!

Across the U.S, many veterans visit schools to talk to children about their experiences in the military. Usually, the veterans talk about the meaning of the U.S flag, and how they protected our country. One of these veterans, Christopher Bain, shares how he connected with the students he's met."I tell [students] a little bit about my story,...I wanted to serve my country...and keep the freedoms that we have." This gives both sides of the visit a different view of the opportunity, and provides them with new information. This helps kids learn more about America, and helps Veterans to express their time on duty in different ways. To raise drug awareness, schools across the country are holding a system called Red Ribbon Week. This is supposed to be a school week that has different topics to express the same message. Some schools use cups on their gates to spell out Red Ribbon Week, wear red or pink, position themselves in a red ribbon, or other creative ideas. Throughout all of California, all schools had an earthquake drill. This is called the great shakeout. The first shake out drill was in 2008, and means that everyone has to go under their desk and hide from anything that can hit their head or injure them. The teachers then lead the students outside of their classroom in an organized line, and onto a big area with nothing that is hanging over or near them. They then line up with every teacher, and do role-call, before continuing their day. This drill shows people what to do in a dangerous earthquake situation.

Harvests in October
Usually, harvests in October have the pumpkin, which is the most famed out of all. This is because pumpkins can be used to express art by carving into it, and filling it with light, making it a jack-o-lantern. This concept originated in Ireland, but it was used with other foods like potatoes or turnips. This common ritual then ventured into America, which changed the vegetable to a pumpkin. Other than the pumpkin, foods like beans, sweet peppers, celeriac, carrots, chillies, Chinese cabbage, corn, cucumbers, eggplants, kale, lettuce, melons, okra, peas, pumpkins, purslane, rutabaga (Swede), snow peas, spinach, summer squash, tomato, and even more are grown during the fall! Don't forget to get your share!
Thanksgiving is a major holiday in the month of November. This holiday originated from early Native Americans, the pilgrims. This holiday started in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and lasted 3 days. This holiday was held to celebrate the Pilgrims' successful corn harvest. The national holiday is celebrated in many countries, including the United States and Canada. The 90 Native Americans and 50 colonists feasted on deer, bass, wild birds, cod, and even flint, which is a type of rock. This feast adapted into a tradition years after, and now we celebrate it with turkey because it was the most filling food.
