The goal of Cultural Arts 10 is to raise awareness and understanding of cultural competencies. This course will explore Dakota, Saulteaux, and Nehiyaw peoples’ cultural knowledge as well as encourage students to share their own understanding of these topics. Students will develop an understanding of:
spirit in all things,
relationship to all things,
the concept of place as the place where we are born, where we are connected to the land,
ceremony and how it reminds us that we are spiritual beings and
language and how it helps us to understand that we create our world through our thoughts and our speech.
As a non-Indigenous educator facilitating Cultural Arts 20, my goal is to provide opportunities for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to experience culture, language, and history by building relationships with community members, knowledge carriers, and elders. As we work through this course together, we will learn, share, and explore Indigenous ways of knowing and being in this world. I humbly accept the journey that has been laid before me to facilitate this course for our students at Kelliher School. - Ms. Deck
All knowledge carriers and elders who participated in this course, have given us permission to record and upload the knowledge they are sharing. They recognize the sacredness of the oral tradition as well as the importance of providing youth with the opportunity to continue to learn during this difficult time as we transition to on-line learning. Protocol of offering tobacco was adhered to in the request of this knowledge.
