E1: Actively read and listen
Definition: Demonstrates both a literal and inferential understanding of the written and the spoken word in all areas of the curriculum.
Examples: 1) An active reading example would be analyzing a writer’s thesis or theme using key details to support the analysis.
2) An active listening example would be evaluating a classmate’s speech using a specific rubric.
E2: Work collaboratively
Definition: Works well with others to get things done.
Example: Students each successfully complete their piece of a small group project which involves working together through differences to tie each part with the others and present the results.
E3: Set goals, make priorities, and manage progress
Definition: Develops and enhances individual qualities to gain success and satisfaction in the various environments in which the individual lives, studies and works.
Examples: 1) Students participate in a career assessment, which allows them to identify a specific career path to explore, including a next-step process for their investigations.
2) Students keep an individual grade record of progress in a given course, updating periodically and determining mid quarter and final grades.
3) Students keep an assignment book with frequent entries updating progress on class work and projects including making a daily “to do” list.
E4. Use technology effectively
Definition: Uses a variety of software and hardware tools to research a topic and gather information with a critical eye in order to communicate the information clearly to other students
Example: The “geometry kite project” uses a variety of media (such as print and online resources) to create an original oral, written, or visual presentation. (math and science)
E5. Understand how individual parts make up a system
Definition: Gathers, analyzes and evaluates evidence, arguments, claims and beliefs; pulls together and makes connections based on analysis; and views the outcome as a web of relationships as opposed to focusing on a particular detail of a product.
Examples: 1) Using multiple resources to write a formal research paper with a unique theses, idea or purpose, on a topic using a particular critical perspective.
2) Student creates an original collage image using techniques, subject matter, and intention based on the satirical work of Terry Gilliam who was influenced by the early 20th century Dada art movement. (English and fine art examples)
E6: Analyze the impact of people on society
Definition: Connects local citizenship and participation in local society within a context of a larger national and global community, in order to promote insight into, and respect for the diverse life and culture of others. Informs oneself about current events and issues in order to determine an individual’s active role in responding to and shaping the civil environment in ways that promote a healthy present and future.
Examples: 1) Students compare and contrast the breakfast traditions of people in Japan and Nigeria with their own and then prepare a cross cultural meal of those foods.
2) Students research, examine and report on the handling of waste management and recycling in three large cities of 4 million people or more on three different continents, including one in North America.
3)Students collect news articles related to a specific current issue/topic of concern or interest to them and write a personal response detailing a three point strategy for dealing with the issue.
E7: Articulate and defend ideas
Definition: Expresses and supports thinking with logical evidence. Formats and styles are defined by the layout and design of the expression, whether it be a variety of written genres, or a mixture of written, visual, and verbal modes of expression.
Examples: 1) Write and deliver a speech presenting a point and supporting it with evidence.
2) Create and present a visual depiction of an idea, such as a political or analytic stance, in a commercial or advertising poster exhibiting a particular point of view both visually and verbally.
E8: Solve problems and make informed decisions
Definition: Makes logical judgments based on the context of a situation in order to progress a task towards completion.
Examples: 1) Students design containers intended to insulate an egg from the impact of a fifteen foot drop. As a group the students must share ideas, formulate a plan, construct the device, and test its effectiveness. In the face of failure, students revise their plans and redesign the device until the outcome is successful.
2) Students in a group design a new society, a utopia, planning and considering all aspects of what is needed to make a society run smoothly – including the removal of waste, the production of food, jobs, and safety. Once students have built a model of the society, groups will then assess each other and themselves based on a rubric of needs and variables. Students will have to contend with the varying wants and needs of each individual within the group and work together to create a cohesive society.
E9: Create and innovate
Definitions:
Example:
E10: Contribute to a just and sustainable future
Definition: Cares for our natural and human made environment. Assesses each activity to determine how the impact may be eliminated, minimized and/or managed to maintain an environment that is healthy and safe now and for the future.
Example: Students research, analyze and develop a proposal for how to provide water to students during the school day. What do students and the school need? How does bottled water impact the school environment? What natural resources are used to provide bottled water versus tap water? What are the different benefits and impacts of how we provide water to students? What plan meets our needs, is manageable in a school setting, and has the smallest impact on the environment? (science, social studies)
