Bell work takes place the beginning of class and consists of DOL and WOW. DOL and WOW is class work and not homework. All work is found on Google Classroom. Each day an assignment is completed. On Fridays students take a quiz, using the notes they have taken during the week.
W.O.W. stands for Word of the Week. All work and videos are found on Google Classroom. Students are given one academic vocabulary word each week and they complete a series of activities, all week, related to that word. Understanding academic vocabulary is important because these are terms that are in the Arizona State Standards and are often on state-wide and district-wide testing. Below is a list of the activities students must complete each day.
Copy a sentence that includes the WOW word.
Highlight words or phrases that might help determine the meaning of the word.
Write what they think the word means.
Select which type of context clue was used: synonym, antonym, explanation, example
Highlight the part of speech, that shows how the word was used in the sentence.
Write definition from dictionary, based upon how the word is used in the sentence.
Rewrite the definition in the student's own words.
Draw a picture describing what the word means.
Identify the prefix, root word, and suffix and define each.
Write different forms of the word (noun, adjective, verb, adverb)
List the synonyms and antonyms of the word.
List words and/or phrases that show the connotative meaning.
Make up two sentences, using the word.
