Decide what is your reason is for reading the piece.
Read through questions and highlight the keywords in each question a different color.

Look over the piece to see how it is organized and make a prediction.
Skim reading piece. You aren’t reading yet.
What do you notice about how the piece is organized?
Highlight each item you notice in the chart.
Type next to the items specifically what you saw.

Read the piece, keeping in mind why you are reading it
What items are you specifically looking for in the piece?
Look at the keywords you highlighted in your questions.
Highlight the keywords from the questions below. You are making your “grocery list.”
Read the story.
Write about your first impression of what you have read above the piece.
Reflect on the content you read.
You are NOT critiquing the author’s writing.

Identify vocabulary words you do not understand.
Copy and paste the cloud in front of words you did not understand.
List the words below.
Look up the words on Cambridge Dictionary and list the definitions.
You can also use Dictionary.com, but only if you can’t find it in Cambridge.
Identify sections you did not understand.
Copy and paste the question mark ? in front of sections you did not understand.
Copy and paste the x X in front of sections that contradict with something you thought you knew.

highlight the piece and begin filling out your graphic organizer
Use one word to describe each section. You are finding the subject of each paragraph. Type your one word in the box provided for each section.
-You may go to the following links and find an APPROPRIATE picture that describes your passage.
Highlight each answer the same color as your question.
NOTE: You may not be able to highlight some of your answers in the text. For example, “What type of writing is the piece?” Just answer the question.
NOTE: REMEMBER: DO NOT highlight entire sentences.
-# Number each of your supporting details.
Begin filling out graphic organizer with highlighted information, if you have one to fill out.
You are now ready to begin answering your reading response questions.
