In the Horizon High School Drama Program, we offer a variety of drama classes to suit anyone's desires.
THEATRE PRODUCTION & STAGECRAFT
Theatre Production & Stagecraft is our technical theatre program here at Horizon. Students will learn the basics of everything behind the scenes in any show in this class. Students will learn about building complex scenery, various aspects of design, costumes, lighting, rigging, sound, makeup, stage management, and more. Students will also partake in different team-building exercises that build trust and leadership skills. Students will also help with our mainstage productions in various ways during class time in this class.
DRAMA 1-2
Drama 1-2 is the entry-level drama program at Horizon. The focus of this first-year drama class is to introduce you to the art of theatre in every aspect, starting with Greek theatre history, improvisation, Shakespeare, and modern theatre techniques. Students enrolled in this class will perform in an after-school showcase in both the fall and spring semesters. We will also perform and study scenes, history, stages, character development, puppetry, and playwriting. You are encouraged to participate in the after-school program by being on a crew, attending workshops, retreats, and other related outings, and auditioning for everything you can.
DRAMA 3-4
Drama 3-4 is the intermediate drama class offered at Horizon. In this class, we place a strong focus on acting, diving deeper into the craft by exploring more complex aspects of drama, including character analysis, scene study, and advanced performance techniques. Students will also develop and enhance their collaboration-based skills, working closely with their peers to create dynamic performances.
As part of the course, students will perform in a one-act show during both the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, they will participate in a fall and spring showcase, held in the BlackBox theatre, allowing them to apply what they’ve learned in a professional-style setting. This class offers opportunities to expand performance experience while building a solid foundation in ensemble work and production skills.
DRAMA 5-6 /7-8
Drama 5-6/7-8 is the highest-level theatre course at Horizon, and it combines upperclassmen from both levels to foster collaboration and peer mentorship. More experienced students have the opportunity to guide those newer to advanced theatre techniques. This course focuses on character development, ensemble building, directing, and play analysis, with an emphasis on honing monologues.
Students in this class will participate in both a fall and spring showcase, where they will perform their work in front of an audience. Additionally, all students will take part in the end-of-the-year *Senior Dream Roles* showcase, a special event where seniors perform their dream roles as a culmination of their high school theatre experience. As this is the capstone theatre course, I will treat you as though you are preparing to major in theatre in college, and I expect you to push yourselves to new heights. Your enrollment in this class tells me that you are serious about the craft, and this is your final opportunity to refine your skills before moving on to the next stage of your theatre journey.
