The National Honor Society (NHS) is an honor society highlighting students who have excelled academically. However, it is more than just an honor roll, NHS recognizes students who have put forth much effort and dedication in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The members of the Putnam Valley High School Chapter of the National Honor Society are expected to dedicate their time to giving back to the community through various fundraisers and volunteer work. Ms. Lisa Penta is the advisor of the National Honor Society.
In 1921, the National Honor Society was created under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson of Pittsburgh, PA. The organization continues to grow today across the country. Nationally they have a constitution, society colors, and an emblem. These can be found on their official website. The NHS motto is "Noblesse Oblige" which is French for "Nobility Obligates". This statement is so very true for NHS members. If they are truly people who exhibit those four characteristics, then they should feel obligated to improve the world around them, not only for themselves but for future generations.
Please be sure to read the National Honor Society Guidelines found in the “Links” column for more information about eligibility, requirements, and expectations.
