Basic Strokes

These are the basic strokes used to form letters and numbers when writing.

Writing Paper with Guidelines

In kindergarten we use writing paper that has guidelines. It helps students have consistent size when writing letters and numbers. It also helps with developing correct formation of the letters and numbers.

The top line is "the sky". The dotted line is "the fence". The bottom line is "the grass".

Sizing

Using the guidelines helps students have consistent size of letters and numbers when writing.

The "tall" letters and numbers touch the sky and sit on the grass. (Size 1)

The "short" letters touch the fence and sit on the grass. (Size 2)

The "drop-down" letters touch the fence, sit on the grass, and have a tail that drops down into the dirt. (Size 3)

Spacing

Spacing is important when writing. We write the letters within a word close together without touching. We use spaces to separate words.
