Kindergarten Sight Words
Copy of 2023 Kindergarten Sight Words.pdfThere are 43 sight words that our kindergarten students need to know. The words are divided into 8 lists according to phonics skill. The top half of the lists are decodable words. Those words are called flash words. The bottom half of the lists are heart words.
What are sight words?
Sight words are just what they sound like-words that you recognize immediately when you see them, whether they are spelled regularly or irregularly. This allows for more fluent reading and better comprehension.
Decodable words are words that you can use phonics to sound out. "Did" and "in" are examples of decodable words.
Heart words are words that are not fully decodable because part of the word is spelled irregularly. "Said" and "was" are examples of heart words.
Why do we need to teach sight words?
Once sight words are learned, it frees up space in your brain. Children then use this energy to decode more difficult words and comprehend more complex text. Confidence is built as words are mastered.

This year the children can look n their portable sound walls to check the spelling of the kindergarten sight words once the word has been introduced. They say the word and isolate the first sound. Then find the letter that spells that sound. They look for the word under that spelling.

*The words on List 6 are open syllables so the vowel sound is long in those words. We added those words to Vowel Valley under the Long e (equal) and Long o (ocean).

Heart words have the heart above the part that needs to be learned by heart.
Flash words are decodable. There is a the lightning bolt on the card.
Underneath each word is a set of boxes. There is one box for each sound in the word. The letters in the boxes show the spelling for each sound. Some sounds are spelled with more than one letter.
