Data Derivation, Processing, and Citation Information
This page provides citation and attribution guidance for Version 1.2 across the registry’s three geographic levels: Administrative 0 (Episcopal Conferences), Administrative 1 (Ecclesiastical Provinces), and Administrative 2 (Dioceses and equivalent jurisdictions). Each dataset includes an APA citation, followed by additional citation formats available in the expandable section below it. Please use the citation corresponding to the specific dataset and version you have used, and retain the version information when citing the data in research, publications, maps, or other work.
For guidance on citing research data, see the Big Ten Academic Alliance Data Citation Guide.
DOIs are currently in progress and will be added to the citations and metadata once assigned.

Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Episcopal Conferences of the Catholic Church, Version 1.2 dataset was derived from the Global Diocesan Boundaries, Version 1.0 dataset developed in 2016 by Burhans and collaborators at GoodLands and Esri. The 2016 diocesan geometries were retained without boundary revisions in the 2019 update. Episcopal conference information from David M. Cheney's ecclesiastical data was joined to the corresponding diocesan records and used to derive the geographic extent of each conference.
Use 2016 diocesan boundaries: Retained the existing Version 1.2 diocesan geometries as the geographic foundation.
Join conference information: Joined episcopal conference attributes from Catholic-Hierarchy's ecclesiastical data to the corresponding diocesan records.
Derive conference boundaries: Aggregated the diocesan geometries according to their assigned episcopal conferences.
Review and curate: Checked the resulting records and geographic representation for consistency.
Version 1.2 therefore represents an attribute-based geographic derivation from the 2016 diocesan boundaries, rather than a new boundary update or global redrawing of ecclesiastical jurisdictions, as occurs with the 2026 data.

Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Ecclesiastical Provinces of the Catholic Church, Version 1.2 dataset was derived from the Global Diocesan Boundaries, Version 1.2 dataset developed in 2016 by Burhans and collaborators at GoodLands and Esri. The 2016 diocesan geometries were retained, and documented metropolitan relationships were used to identify dioceses belonging to each ecclesiastical province and aggregate their boundaries.
Under the Code of Canon Law, neighboring particular Churches may be constituted as an ecclesiastical province, presided over by a metropolitan, the archbishop of the metropolitan diocese (CIC, cann. 431 - 435). Provinces were therefore based on documented ecclesiastical relationships rather than geographic proximity alone. Areas without a documented metropolitan relationship were not assigned an inferred province.
The resulting layer represents the ecclesiastical provinces supported by the documented relationships available for Version 1.2, rather than a complete geographic partition of all diocesan territory.

Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Dioceses of the Catholic Church, Version 1.2 dataset represents an updated version of the original 2016 global diocesan boundary dataset. The boundaries were revised through additional geographic research, ecclesiastical source comparison, and cartographic review, incorporating new and corrected information available through 2018 - 2019.
The dataset retained the established global geographic framework while updating jurisdictional boundaries and attributes where new evidence warranted revision. Sources included ecclesiastical maps and records, geographic data, and information from Catholic Hierarchy of the world database and other documented sources.
The resulting dataset was standardized for global geographic analysis and maintained the approximately 1:3,000,000 cartographic scale of the original dataset.
