Data Derivation, Processing, and Citation Information
This page provides citation and attribution guidance for Version 1.0 across the registry’s three geographic levels: Administrative 0 (Episcopal Conferences), Administrative 1 (Ecclesiastical Provinces), and Administrative 2 (Dioceses and equivalent jurisdictions). Each dataset includes an APA citation, followed by additional citation formats available in the expandable section below it. Please use the citation corresponding to the specific dataset and version you have used, and retain the version information when citing the data in research, publications, maps, or other work.
For guidance on citing research data, see the Big Ten Academic Alliance Data Citation Guide.
DOIs are currently in progress and will be added to the citations and metadata once assigned.

Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Episcopal Conferences of the Catholic Church, Version 1.0 dataset was derived from the Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church, Version 1.0 dataset developed in 2016. The diocesan boundaries provided the geographic foundation, while episcopal conference affiliations were used to aggregate diocesan territories into conference-level geographic units.
Use diocesan boundaries: Retained the Version 1.0 diocesan geometries as the geographic foundation.
Identify conference affiliations: Associated dioceses with their corresponding episcopal conferences using documented ecclesiastical information.
Aggregate diocesan territories: Dissolved diocesan geometries according to their assigned episcopal conferences to derive conference-level geographic extents.
Review and curate: Reviewed the resulting records and geometries for consistency with the underlying diocesan data and documented conference relationships.
Version 1.0 therefore represents an attribute-based geographic derivation from the 2016 diocesan boundaries, rather than an independent redrawing of episcopal conference boundaries by hand or from novel datasources outside of diocesean data provenance.

Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Ecclesiastical Provinces of the Catholic Church, Version 1.0 dataset was derived from the Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church, Version 1.0 dataset developed in 2016. Documented metropolitan relationships were used to identify dioceses belonging to each ecclesiastical province and aggregate their boundaries.
Under the Code of Canon Law, neighboring particular Churches may be constituted as an ecclesiastical province, presided over by a metropolitan, the archbishop of the metropolitan diocese (CIC, cann. 431 - 435). Provinces were therefore based on documented ecclesiastical relationships rather than geographic proximity alone. Areas without a documented metropolitan relationship were not assigned an inferred province.

Burhans, M., Bell, J., Burhans, D., Carmichael, R., Cheney, D., Deaton, M., Emge, T., Gerlt, B., Grayson, J., Herries, J., Keegan, H., Skinner, A., Smith, M., Sousa, C., Trubetskoy, S. (2016). Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church (Version 1.0) [Data set]. GoodLands Inc., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri).
The Diocesan Boundaries of the Catholic Church, Version 1.0 dataset was the original global geographic construction of Catholic diocesan boundaries, developed in 2016 through research and collaboration between GoodLands, Esri, Catholic-Hierarchy and numerous contributors. The dataset brought together ecclesiastical, cartographic, geographic, and historical sources to construct a standardized global representation of diocesan territories.
1. Compile source materials: Gathered ecclesiastical maps and records, published atlases, geographic and political boundary data, jurisdictional information, point locations, historical materials, and maps shared by members of the Catholic Church.
2. Georeference and compare: Georeferenced historical and contemporary maps and compared them with geographic data and known locations to identify and reconcile boundary information.
3. Research and digitize boundaries: Where no suitable digital boundary data existed, which was most places, boundaries were manually interpreted and digitized from the available evidence.
4. Integrate ecclesiastical data: Connected geographic boundaries with diocesan information from multiple sources, including David M. Cheney's Catholic Hierarchy of the World database.
5. Standardize and review: Harmonized the resulting boundaries to an approximately 1:3,000,000 global cartographic scale and reviewed the dataset for geographic consistency and spatial accuracy.
Because the source materials varied substantially in scale, precision, geographic coverage, and historical context, Version 1.0 represents a standardized geographic interpretation of diocesan boundaries, rather than a survey-level or legally precise delineation of ecclesiastical territory. See the Data Provenance page for additional information about the sources, research, and development of Version 1.0.
