Thank you for taking the time to read about what is happening in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

If you have any questions or would like additional information added to this newsletter, please feel free to reach out to:

The Office of the Dean at sbs-deans-office@purdueglobal.edu

'Twas the week before break, when all through Purdue,             not a student was absent, and neither were you.

The courses were taught by instructors who care,                        in hopes that Winter Break soon would be there.

The students were happy all ready for rest,                               with visions of A's and doing their best.

And every instructor with computer in lap,                                  can settle their brains for a long winter's nap.

We are grateful for you; What a difference you make!                 Happy Holidays to All, and to All a Good Break!

The Importance of Ethical Behavior in the Criminal Justice Profession

The ethical pressures that criminal justice organizations face differ considerably from the ones facing private businesses and other public institutions. Given the amount of authority in the hands of most criminal justice professionals and the potential impact on citizens, it's vital that those working in the criminal justice system understand why ethics are so important.

We sat down with Shane Kelley, EdD, Associate Dean for Public Safety and Legal Studies programs at Purdue Global, to discuss the reasons ethical behavior is important in the criminal justice system.

For over 16 years, The Hope Source's commitment to excellence has led to a groundbreaking behavioral therapy approach and an innovative therapeutic education model, pioneering exceptional learning opportunities for those on the Autism Spectrum. We raise the bar for ethical ABA practice applications in our field, equipping clinicians and technicians with evidence-based strategies across behavior analysis, psychology, neuroscience and special education with respectful, supportive inter-disciplinary collaboration with speech, occupational and other therapists.

Our naturalistic engagements, Purpose Project and Apprenticeship Programs, combine project-based learning with our trauma-responsive ABA goals rooted in social-emotional and executive functioning development to foster meaningful relationship skills and authentic real-world implementation for intrinsic motivation, dignity and personal self-worth. Through our revolutionary hybrid model with Dynamic Minds Academy, we were the first in Indiana to bridge the gap between therapy and education so that clients can grow in a seamless, supportive environment. Therapy provides critical executive functioning skills necessary for an individual to thrive, not just survive in a dynamic classroom or similar complex settings.

From inception, The Hope Source’s definition of success emphasizes quality of life for the whole family, not just the client. Therefore, relationship building is the heart of our holistic mission as we offer readiness and wellness tools for clients and families to empower themselves and embrace possibility as they chart this transformative journey of personal growth.

LYNDA MITTON - PSYCHOLOGY

This Purdue Global professor brings her calling to the online classroom.

For me, working in psychology and concentrating on addiction and trauma was driven by a personal motto of mine: “Go back and get the others.”

I’ve been sober just over 23 years now, but I knew there were other people out there still in the depths of it, and there are still families seeing their loved ones suffer. Being able to make that life-changing difference for others — that’s what started me down this path.

I teach full time now. Sometimes I miss working directly with patients, but I love having a hand in shaping the next generation of counselors. The ones coming up next, we’re going to turn the field over to them, and I want to do it right. I’m passionate about this field, and handing it over is a huge responsibility. I want to make sure those who are going to be helping others feel prepared to do it.

Teaching adult learners through Purdue Global is a unique experience. One of the things I love about teaching them is what they bring to the classroom — what they know. They have such a range of experiences. Some are already working in entry-level positions, and they’re able to share their experience in the discussions and seminars in the classroom. In any discipline, having some career experience is helpful because students collaborate, share their experiences in different areas and discuss how all of this comes together and benefits them, their future clients and their communities.
