Congratulations to Leslie Jonhson. Assistant Department Chair of Mathematics in the School of Multidisciplinary and Professional Studies, for submitting the winning Purdue Global Village 2026 theme, Innovation with Purpose: Designing the Future of Online Learning.
When asked to explain more about the theme idea, Leslie shared, "I wanted the 2026 Purdue Global Village theme to reflect both the excitement and the responsibility that come with shaping the future of online learning. Rapidly evolving technologies and shifting workforce expectations are driving new approaches to how we design, deliver, and assess learning. As a result, we are continually deepening our understanding of how, where, and when meaningful learning happens most effectively. At the heart of this work is innovation with purpose, which underscores the importance of ensuring that every advancement in online learning is intentional and student-centered."
Leslie explained how the theme represents the conference by saying, "For Purdue Global, the theme reflects its learner-centered, flexible, and workforce-aligned identity, grounded in an action-oriented mindset that values momentum, collaboration, and purposeful execution. In the broader landscape of higher education, the theme speaks to a shared responsibility across institutions to lead with innovation with purpose, thoughtfully embracing rapid technological change while preserving academic integrity, fostering human connection, and ensuring that meaningful learning remains at the center of every advancement. PG Village provides a forum for meaningful exchange, serving as a conduit for innovation with purpose!”
We asked Leslie what she enjoys most about working at Purdue Global. She shared, "What I most enjoy about my work at Purdue Global is the people! I genuinely value the opportunity to build meaningful personal connections with colleagues and also help facilitate connections so others can collaborate, learn from one another, and build their own relationships over time. I also enjoy attending and presenting at internal and external conferences, where I can learn from peers across higher education and bring those insights back into my work. I find great fulfillment in helping faculty and staff recognize their potential and explore ways to empower themselves and others. Supporting others in becoming the best version of themselves is one of the most rewarding parts of my role!"
Leslie also shared some advice about professional development: "My advice is to approach professional development as an ongoing practice rather than an event. The most impactful growth often comes from small, consistent steps, such as trying new tools or reflecting on student feedback. It's important to stay curious about emerging trends without feeling pressured to adopt everything at once! I would also encourage colleagues to focus on purpose-driven learning: asking not just what is new, but what actually improves student learning and engagement. Finally, building communities of practice can make professional development more sustainable and enjoyable. You learn more when you learn alongside others!”
Leslie lives in North Alabama with her husband, two daughters (ages 17 and 20), and their two cats. Traveling is her favorite hobby, and she says the planning part is almost as much fun as the actual trip! Cruising as a family of four is her favorite. Leslie shared, "Our quality time together is priceless to me!"
