Maidu Virtual Charter Academy has partnered with Sierra College to be part of the Sierra Promise! The Sierra Promise is a commitment to provide local high school students the opportunity to go to college.

Students who commit to Sierra Promise can:

  • Receive help with all the steps to get into college

  • Get earlier access to college classes

  • Explore careers and majors

  • Create a fast-track plan to complete your degree or certificate

Students who commit to Sierra Promise get additional services and support. These include:

  • Priority registration for your first semester, an education and career plan, assistance with financial aid/scholarships

  • Referrals to support and success programs such as RISE, Guardian Scholars, Puente, EOPS, etc.

  • Referrals to additional career and academic resources

  • Workshops and events to help with registration and orientation

In return, Promise Scholars commit to the following:

  • Complete the FAFSA or Dream application

  • Participate in registration and orientation events sponsored by Sierra Promise

  • Enroll in 30 or more units within your first year (summer, fall, spring)

Yes! AB2 (Assembly Bill 2) was passed which means ALL first time college students who've earn no college units (this does not include students who've earned units through dual enrollment or academic enrichment while they were still in high school) and who complete the FAFSA/Dream application AND enroll in 12 units or more will have their tuition paid for.

What Are Guided Pathways @ Sierra College?

  • The ultimate goal of Guided Pathways at Sierra College is to improve the number of students earning community college credentials while closing equity gaps.

  • The Guided Pathways Model creates a highly structured approach to student success that:

  • Provides all students with a set of clear course-taking patterns that promotes better enrollment decisions and prepares students for future success.

  • Integrates support services in ways that make it easier for students to get the help they need during every step of their community college experience.

Key Elements of Guided Pathways:

Sierra College has a structured onboarding process including improved placement tests and co-requisite instruction that provide students with clear, actionable, and usable information they need to get on the right start in college.

  • Proactive academic and career advising from the start though completion and/or transfer, with assigned point of contact at each stage.

  • Programs that are fully mapped out and aligned with further education and career advance while also providing structured or guided exploration for undecided students.

  • Early alert systems aligned with interventions and resources to help students stay on the pathway, persist, and progress.

  • Instructional support and co-curricular activities aligned with classroom learning and career interests.

  • Redesigning and integrating basic skills/development education classes to accelerate students to college-level classes.
