Unit 1 - Ecology

Unit Outcomes

  • Understand that environmental changes in an environment result in changes in the growth and homeostasis of organisms and food webs.

  • Understand that biotic & abiotic factors affect cells, organisms, populations, communities and ecosystems. Be able to give an example of each.

  • Understand that at each of the above organizational levels, there is an exchange of matter and/or energy.

  • Understand that changes occur within and outside of ecosystems as a result of information exchange.

  • Understand and give examples of how information can be communicated between organisms, and sometimes this information causes a reaction.

  • Understand that populations interact with each other within communities.

  • Understand energy and matter pyramids within an ecosystem.

  • Understand how competition among organisms changes population size and distribution of species.

  • Understand succession and that ecosystem distribution changes over time.

  • Understand the importance of biodiversity to the stability of an ecosystem and that population trends change with the level of variation in a population.

  • Understand human impacts on ecosystems.
