What is STEAM?

STEAM

is an acronym for

“Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics”

Over the years, STEAM Education efforts by K–12 teachers have been aimed at ensuring that the United States remains competitive in the global marketplace and G. Harold Antrim Elementary School has created a program whereby each student in the district receives STEAM class and is exposed to this infused learning to ensure their students are prepared for the future.

The development of STEAM proficiency begins in elementary school. Students apply the rigor of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematical content while engaging in learning activities that investigate the natural world. Students are exposed to real life issue and problem solving challenges they explore with the use of technology and engineering solutions. As students progress through elementary school it is the goal for students to independently integrate STEM Standards of Practice. Students will apply the roles and views of STEAM career professionals and analyze real world issues, that involve the need to problem solve . Other disciplines such as social studies, language arts, performing arts, and health are added to the program when appropriate to create a wholistic approach more suited for twenty-first century learning needs.
