In 1994, a group of mothers decided they’d had enough. Gangs and drugs in the Shalimar neighborhood of Costa Mesa had created an unsafe environment for their kids. So, they reached out for help.
Community leaders came together to open the doors of Shalimar Learning Center, a safe space for the neighborhood kids to come after school and get help with homework.
Over 100 kids showed up on the first day!
What began as a single neighborhood center has grown into programs in over 400 California schools – from San Diego to San Francisco – serving over 200,000 students. Founded in 1997, Think Together partners with schools to change the odds for kids. Think Together delivers nationally-recognized expanded learning programs and school improvement, offered through affiliate partner Orenda Education.
We want a community where all kids get a great education that prepares them for college and career.

Who we are
Who we are
The end of a student’s public education is just as important as the beginning. Think Together continues to offer tutoring to high school students while working with them to intentionally prepare for their future. Advisors work with students on college applications, essay writing, and scholarship funding. Volunteers expose them to various industries through panel presentations, field trips, and internships. Our goal is to equip them with the tools they need to succeed as they launch their professional lives and become contributing members of their communities.

Hi family and students!
My name is Fiona Burns. I began working in the educational field in 2000, at a technical high school in Connecticut. I have a BS degree in Sociology and Education (Post University) Master’s in Educational Leadership (Concordia University-Portland) and currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership (Concordia University-Chicago). I have been working with Think Together for the last two and half years. I’m obsessed with evening out on the academic playing field, for ALL students, to learn and receive equitable resources to learn and grow.
It is a pleasure being a part of DHSHS “The Nest” Team as we continue to Change the Odds for Kids. I am here for it ALL!

"I’m so excited to join the Think Together team! Although my degree is in Marine Biology, I discovered my true passion for teaching and supporting youth after working as a naturalist, where I had the opportunity to connect young people with nature and learning in meaningful ways.
What makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me is that I get to work at the very high school where I graduated. It’s an honor to come full circle and give back to the community that shaped me. I’m excited to support older youth in reaching their fullest potential."

Ms. NayeliHello! I am Ms. Nayelly and this is my first year as an OYL but I have been dedicated to working with older youth in the PSUSD for three years now. I love to dance, read, play board games and I am always willing to try something new. I am passionate about equitable education and making every student feel seen and empowered through their learning.

Ms. Faith Hi! My name is Faith Croom, I was born and raised in California, I love music, and have two beautiful dogs! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, AZ in 2019. I am also currently pursuing a Master's in Social Work. From a young age, my passion has been working with children and helping shape the next generation and I am excited to get the opportunity to do so this year at The Nest. I am so excited to get to know all of you this year!

"Born 1974 in Philadelphia PA whereas a boy had many childhood passions as a gifted athlete I spent many years playing organized sports where I first learned about community service which instantly became a true joy to me helping others. 1988 I enlisted in the US navy where I served Honorably. After being discharged from the Navy, I enrolled in the first culinary associate degree program that CIA had to offer.Currently I'm the Executive Director/corporate Chef of urban culinary academy in Desert hot springs. But my true journey when moving to Desert Hot Springs were helping the seniors and youth of this community."
