Issue Brief
The creation of an issue brief gave me the opportunity to explore the extent in which this issue has affected students of Pennsylvania and cultivate a set of solutions that may be implemented by policymakers to reduce the issue. This issue brief explores the issue that is book bans through a basis of background information on a larger scale, then on a more local scale taking us to Pennsylvania's most affected county, York. Ultimately, this issue brief gave me the opportunity to not only educate myself on this issue that is of great importance, but also use the education I have received to create probable solutions that can work against the issue.
Educational Infographic
The quality of education students receive in Pennsylvania has been negatively impacted by the censorship and banning of books. Through the creation and distribution of an educational infographic, I have been able to bring awareness to this issue and pose solutions that can combat the issue in its entirety. This educational infographic provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about book bans and the harm they pose. The viewers gain an understanding of book bans and the presence they have in Pennsylvania. Through the use of a QR code, viewers can quickly be led to a website where they can sign a petition to reduce the amount of book bans.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic Analysis Essay
This essay explores the issue of book bans on a more specific level, exploring a work that has been continuously banned due to its LGBTQ+ themes. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is a work written by Alison Bechdel that explores her experiences growing up in a time when being part of the LGBTQ+ community was not accepted. Through this vulnerable piece, readers gain an understanding and appreciation for the hardships Bechdel, and so many others, have gone through as a way to be recognized for being themselves. Throughout my essay I explore the importance of this work and the harm caused by its banning as it only silences the voice of an individual who has already been silenced many times over.
